Planning Analyst - Metra (CLOSES 1/1/19)

Who: Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

What: Reporting directly to the Department Head, Long Range Planning, the Planning Analyst will serve as lead Metra representative in various station area planning studies. Perform planning activities in support of Metra's strategic planning efforts and other regional, corridor, and station planning studies of the Metra rail system including planning for major capital expansion projects.  Participates in and executes elements of commuter rail planning studies. Program Manager (Part Time) - Uptown United

Safety Data Fellow (for post-grads within 3 years) - US Dept. of Transportation

Who: A post-graduate research project and developmental opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Secretary of Transportation. The appointment will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in the Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance in Washington, DC as a Safety Data Fellow (participant).
The Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance supports the Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy and Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in policy matters affecting all aspects of transportation. The office provides technical expertise for the Department’s legislative, regulatory and research programs, conducts analyses and recommends policies, and serves as the Departmental focal point for initiatives related to safety across all transportation modes.

What: The appointment will be supporting the Safety Data Initiative (SDI), and the goal of the project is to develop DOT’s data-driven approach to decision making as it relates to safety issues with implications across the modes of transportation (highway, rail, air, water, and pipeline). The participant will collaborate with individuals from DOT’s operating administrations and offices under the Secretary of Transportation, such as the Office of the Chief Information Officer, to connect, understand, analyze, and visualize DOT safety databases, data sources outside of the Department, and geospatial data. The work will foster increased DOT use of data to inform programmatic and policy decisions, and further demonstrate the value of a cross-modal approach through the power of data analytics and visualization.

Research Associate - Heartland Alliance

Who: Heartland Alliance - Research and Policy Division.
Heartland Alliance informs public policy decisions and advances solutions to improve opportunities and quality of life for people experiencing inequity, living in poverty, and facing danger.  Heartland Alliance’s Research & Policy Division engages in research on social issues and solutions, policy and systems change, and field building nationwide. What: The Social IMPACT Research Center conducts applied research for Heartland Alliance, other nonprofits, foundations, advocacy groups, governments, coalitions, and the media to help them measure, inform, and grow their social impact. What: The Director of Policy provides overall direction for the Policy & Advocacy (P&A) team and engages actively in social policy initiatives aligned with Heartland Alliance’s mission and vision. We specifically focus on issues related to poverty, employment and economic security, justice, safety, health care, human services, immigration, financial equity and housing/homelessness. At the state and local level, the team works to draft and advance legislative and administrative solutions across our areas of focus; produces information to inform decision-makers and advance our campaigns; and builds strategic alliances and coalitions to lift up an amplified voice to create systemic change. The team also weighs in strategically on national and local issues to advance the needs of Heartland Alliance programs and participants. Director responsibilities include assessing the landscape for new opportunities, positioning, and partnerships as well as monitoring emerging issues, trends, and innovations. Transportation Planner I (Transit Operations) - North Central Texas Council of Governments (Arlington, TX)

Who: The North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) is a voluntary association of, by and for local governments, and was established to assist local governments in planning for common needs, cooperating for mutual benefit, and coordinating for sound regional development. NCTCOG's purpose is to strengthen both the individual and collective power of local governments and to help them recognize regional opportunities, eliminate unnecessary duplication, and make joint decisions. Since 1974, the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) has served as the Metropolitan Planning Organization for transportation in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metropolitan Area and is responsible for developing transportation plans and programs that address the complex needs of the rapidly growing area.

Publicity Promotion Specialist (Energy Conscious Campus progam) - UIC Office of Sustainability

Who: The University of Illinois at Chicago, Office of Sustainability is seeking to fill a Publicity-Promotion Specialist position (37.5 hours/week).

What: Under administrative direction, the Publicity-Promotion Specialist develops and oversees the Energy Conscious Campus program, publicizing and promoting this social marketing initiative to create behavior change in the campus community to reduce energy consumption. The Specialist will develop, implement, and measure the success of the Energy Conscious Campus Marketing Plan whose goal is to achieve and maintain a 1.5% reduction in campus energy use. They will also take complex energy consumption data and greenhouse gas emissions data and translate it into informational material that is understandable by faculty, staff, students, and the general public. Urban Sustainability Program Manager – Yale University

What: The Urban Sustainability Program Manager is responsible for leading key efforts to enhance collaboration between Yale and area partners on transportation, community engagement, land use, and biodiversity. The Foundation seeks a Program Manager to play a senior leadership role in the effective implementation of the foundation’s Prenatal-3 year old (PN-3) priorities in states and communities under the Pritzker Children’s Initiative (PCI). This effort will actively support a set of states and communities as they seek to undertake common policy and program advancements to ensure children under three are on track for later school readiness. Over the next five years, the Foundation intends to support development of model initiatives in states and communities that advance policies and programs that ensure a strong start in life, such as home visiting, quality child care for infants and toddlers, and universal connections that link families with infants and toddlers to essential and needed services. Though this Initiative, the Foundation makes catalytic investments in states, communities, promising models, and effective communicators to create a tipping point by building a national movement for prioritizing infants, toddlers, and their families for public action and investment.

The Program Manager will support national organizations, state stakeholders and leading early childhood researchers to fuel momentum for positive policy change in states and communities across the country. S/he will work with a variety of partners including national organizations supporting state strategy, state-level organizations that are planning for and guiding implementation of state strategy, , and organizations at all levels leading innovative policy and program development to expand access to high quality services for infants and toddlers. S/he will work closely with the PCI Director to link state leaders to experts and organizations engaged by the Foundation to support them, and facilitate peer-to-peer connections across selected states. Within states, the Foundation anticipates working with the public sector, foundation leaders, and non-profit policy and advocacy organizations as part of the PN-3 strategy.

Development Director - Lawndale Christian Legal Center

Who: Lawndale Christian Legal Center (LCLC) provides North Lawndale at-risk youth, 24 and under, with community- based holistic legal services. This highly relational and innovative model of holistic defense is performed by an interdisciplinary team of attorneys and social service providers working seamlessly together in the community to support, serve, and advocate for youth and young adults in contact with the criminal justice system. The holistic team works together to meet the various needs of our youth from the time they are arrested through the conclusion of their trial, satisfactory completion of any period of probation, supervision, or parole, and beyond. By serving youth holistically in their community, LCLC is leading the transformation of the traditional criminal justice system by establishing new best practices in community-based holistic interventions that are more effective and cost less. Economic Development Specialist - City of Evanston

Who: City of Evanston

What: Economic Development Specialist

This position performs responsible professional work to assist in the development and implementation of City of Evanston economic development programs and projects that support commercial, office, and industrial businesses and development activities. The Economic Development Division’s work is primarily focused on the retention of existing Evanston businesses located in traditional train station and neighborhood merchant districts and within commercial office developments in downtown Evanston. This is achieved through business visit interviews, information gathering, analysis and presentation, and the application of publicly funded programs and partnerships with private service providers.

The Economic Development Specialist position will require regular reports to the City Manager and other senior city staff, and merchant districts leaders on business recruitment and retention activities, economic trends, and local real estate activity. The position will require frequent social media posts and website updates through the Evanston Edge brand, in addition to publishing short interviews or stories featuring local business owners and entrepreneurs. The Economic Development Specialist will also be required to implement and maintain the City of Evanston business registry. The position will require the creation and maintenance of an economic indicator dashboard.

The Economic Development Division is comprised of a staff of two and is located within the Community Development Department. The Economic Development Specialist reports to the Economic Development Manager; and the Economic Development Manager reports to the Community Development Director.

Economic Development Coordinator - City of St. Charles

What: This position is responsible for coordinating all economic development functions for the City of St. Charles. GIS Developer - Cook County Bureau of Technology

What: Under the direction of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Manager, the GIS Developer manages and designs the GIS enterprise as related to projects and application development. Assists with the design, development and maintenance of geospatial applications through concept, design, and implementation phases. Coordinates the control and maintenance of GIS enterprise operation tasks across various agencies within Cook County to ensure compatibility and integration with the enterprise strategic plan. Village Planner (Dept. of Community & Economic Develoment) - Brookfield, IL

Who: The Village of Brookfield, IL, population 19,500+, is accepting applications for the position of Village Planner, a position available in the Community and Economic Development Department. This position will report directly to the Community and Economic Development Director.

What: Qualified candidates must have experience in the planning field with excellent oral and written communication skills as well as analytic ability. Candidates should be capable of evaluating and managing commercial, residential, and mixed-use development proposals, meeting with the public to discuss development proposals, assisting with long range planning projects, and presenting before boards, commissions, and elected officials. Because the position requires direct interaction with various constituent groups including residents, developers, public, etc., a friendly customer service orientation is necessary.

Planner - Village of Huntley, IL

Who: Village of Huntley, IL, Development Services Department

What: This position performs professional, technical, and administrative work related to new developments in the Village. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, performing varied services and assignments related to zoning administration, site plan review, project management, long-range planning, and code enforcement. What: We are seeking a talented Planner to help prepare projects in our small, but growing Detroit office. In particular, we are looking for someone with skills in mapping and graphics plus research and writing. This position involves drafting and editing reports and documents, preparation of plan maps, development of graphics and document layout, and preparation of presentation materials. Data collection is also part of the work including traffic counts, parking inventories, land use surveys, and occasionally intercept surveys of people on the street. Urban Designer II - Farr Associates (Chicago)
