Visiting Undergraduate Affairs Data Analyst - University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)

What: The Visiting Undergraduate Affairs Data Analyst performs research and creates data visualizations in the areas of undergraduate student success, program assessment and effectiveness, and strategic planning. This position develops and conducts research, and analyzes data for decision making and policy implementation in areas including (but not limited to) undergraduate student retention and graduation, student goal attainment, program assessment and evaluation, access and equity, and functional benchmarking specific to higher education.

Responsibilities:

Data Visualization

·         Make complex datasets more accessible, understandable and usable by creating visual data models.

·         Develop and maintain integrated data dashboards to display student data in support of institutional goals.

·         Integrate multiple relational data sets to create data visualizations.

 

Research Design

·         Conduct evidence-based best practice research and perform studies for strategic planning, program and policy assessment, and student support services.

·         Design effective research strategies and gather relevant information using primary and secondary sources and techniques (e.g., institutional data, course data, surveys, print sources, government agencies, external research organizations, etc.).

·         Organize and execute research projects, identifying ways to improve research design and data validity.

·         Select and adapt quantitative methods, practices, and theories to perform analysis, interpret results, and document findings.

·         Select and adapt qualitative methods, practices, and theories to perform analysis, interpret results, and document findings.

·         Manage IRB protocols for VPUA projects.

 

Data Analysis and Reporting

·          Identify and analyze patterns in institutional data, make critical observations of policy impact, and recommend strategies and actions.

·         Develop analytical models, identify trends and fluctuations, evaluate limitations of data, and specify the range of results needed for management planning, programming, and resource decisions. Generate ad-hoc reports as needed.

·         Communicate with non-technical end-users to deliver reports.

·         Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree required, preferred in statistics, psychology, education, data analytics, computer engineering, computer science, or related field. Master’s or doctoral degree in these fields or other related disciplines preferred.
  • Minimum two years of experience conducting education, social science, student success related research or data analytics/visualizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with multiple constituents and articulate complex, multifaceted issues related to institutional effectiveness. Ability to collect and analyze qualitative data from a variety of stakeholders.
  • Experience in a higher education setting using data analytics, research methods, and statistics. Experience in developing, maintaining, and managing data dashboards preferred.
  • Proficiency with statistical software such as SPSS, SAS, R. Experience with software such as Python, SQL, and other database query reporting tools preferred. Proven ability to work in distributed systems.

Short-Term Consultant on Global Urbanization - OECD (Paris)

Who: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The mission of OECD is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. The OECD provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We work with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. We measure productivity and global flows of trade and investment. We analyse and compare data to predict future trends. We set international standards on a wide range of things, from agriculture and tax to the safety of chemicals.

What: The OECD’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities is hiring a short-term consultant to contribute to a research project on global urbanization. The project aims at providing a comprehensive overview of global urbanization since 1975 using a new and innovative dataset of all cities across the world. Working in a team with several economists/policy analysts, the selected candidate will be expected to contribute to the project through:
  • Conducting econometric analyses describing the evolution of cities across the world over time 
  • Creating charts, figures and maps visualising the data 
  • Drafting documents describing the results, including sections of the final report 
  • Preparing presentations, talking points and speeches describing the analyses 
  • Organising events related to the project

Who: A post-graduate research project and developmental opportunity is currently available at the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Secretary of Transportation. The appointment will be served within the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in the Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance in Washington, DC as a Safety Data Fellow (participant).
The Office of Policy Development, Strategic Planning, and Performance supports the Under Secretary of Transportation for Policy and Assistant Secretary for Transportation Policy in policy matters affecting all aspects of transportation. The office provides technical expertise for the Department’s legislative, regulatory and research programs, conducts analyses and recommends policies, and serves as the Departmental focal point for initiatives related to safety across all transportation modes.

What: The appointment will be supporting the Safety Data Initiative (SDI), and the goal of the project is to develop DOT’s data-driven approach to decision making as it relates to safety issues with implications across the modes of transportation (highway, rail, air, water, and pipeline). The participant will collaborate with individuals from DOT’s operating administrations and offices under the Secretary of Transportation, such as the Office of the Chief Information Officer, to connect, understand, analyze, and visualize DOT safety databases, data sources outside of the Department, and geospatial data. The work will foster increased DOT use of data to inform programmatic and policy decisions, and further demonstrate the value of a cross-modal approach through the power of data analytics and visualization.

Research Associate - Heartland Alliance

Who: Heartland Alliance - Research and Policy Division.
Heartland Alliance informs public policy decisions and advances solutions to improve opportunities and quality of life for people experiencing inequity, living in poverty, and facing danger.  Heartland Alliance’s Research & Policy Division engages in research on social issues and solutions, policy and systems change, and field building nationwide. The division is home to the Social IMPACT Research Center , Heartland Alliance’s Policy & Advocacy team Heartland Alliance’s National Initiatives on Economic Opportunity.

What: The Social IMPACT Research Center conducts applied research for Heartland Alliance, other nonprofits, foundations, advocacy groups, governments, coalitions, and the media to help them measure, inform, and grow their social impact. Geospatial Data Scientist - Urban Planning and Policy, UIC (Chicago, IL)

Data Analyst - MAPSCorps (Chicago)

Who: MAPSCorps (Meaningful-Active-Productive Science in Service to Communities), a nonprofit organization that provides urban youth with meaningful employment and STEM training opportunities through an innovative technology-based community asset mapping program. MAPSCorps partners with NowPow, a healthcare technology company that consumes the MAPSCorps data to connect community residents to the vital information needed to stay well and live long. NowPow, a for-profit social enterprise, and MAPSCorps, a 501c3, together make up a self-sustaining collective social impact business. MAPSCorps and NowPow catalyze communities by building the workforce of the future and improving the health and vitality of people, businesses, and organizations.

What: The Data Analyst reports to the Executive Director. The Analyst works closely with the Program Manager and is responsible for data processing, reports, and data visualization. During the data collection (mapping) period, the Analyst will supervise seasonal Data Coordinators to ensure efficient data processing and high-quality data. The Data Analyst also manages the MAPSCorps data requests process and mines the MAPSCorps datasets to provide reports and data visualizations to management and partners. The Analyst will work with the Program Manager on outreach efforts to grow data partners and users. The Analysts will also work closely with the MAPSCorps’ engineer to maintain and optimize annually the database, data collection tools, and website. In addition, the Analyst will provide guidance and support efforts to train youth on basic data analytics and visualization techniques. Due to the start-up nature of the organization, there will also be times that will require the Analyst to contribute to other organizational tasks such as reviewing grants, and assisting with program implementation and reporting requirements. Principal duties of the position:
  • Community geography – engage with communities throughout the Portland region to identify innovating mapping and other data visualizations to serve community needs.

OBJECTIVE OF ROLE:
LaSalle Investment Management is currently seeking a full-time Research Analyst or Associate to join the Research & Strategy team in Chicago. This person will contribute to the Research & Strategy team by preparing and communicating real estate market forecasts and investment recommendations.
