The AIA New York Chapter is looking for an individual to serve as the Policy Coordinator for the chapter. Part of the mission of the AIA is to strengthen the voice of architects through government advocacy. We engage with city agencies and policymakers to promote design excellence in New York City's built environment and to support the value of architects as professionals. We are involved in public discourse on historic preservation, transportation and infrastructure, public space and economic development.

In recent months, we have taken positions on the Zoning for Quality and Affordability Resolution put forth by the NYC Department of City Planning. In a coordinated effort with state and local entities, we have challenged the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on their competition conditions and succeeded in convincing them to make significant improvements. We have lobbied in Albany with colleagues from around New York State to educate State Senators and Assembly People on bills we support or oppose. In general, we play an active and critical role in advocating at the city, state and national level for the rights of architects and for legislative conditions that will foster the creation of better design projects.

We are looking for a motivated, passionate individual who will work with senior staff, chapter committees, lobbyists, and the AIANY Board of Directors to identify and develop consensus on specific policy issues of importance to the AIA. This person will coordinate the Chapter's governmental relationships and strengthen them. In addition, this person will be responsible for making sure that these positions and messages are properly placed in the appropriate media, in conjunction with the Executive Director, the AIANY Board President and an external lobby firm.

The Policy Coordinator will monitor important issues in architecture, urban planning, and New York City policy, and be a public face for the AIANY. The coordinator will schedule regular meetings with chapter lobbyists and attend Board of Directors and committee meetings when relevant to advocacy goals. The Coordinator will organize and lead legislative meetings in Washington during the annual AIA Grassroots conference, in Albany for the annual New York State Lobby Day, and in local and congressional districts throughout the year. The coordinator will also prepare and/ or deliver testimony at public hearings when appropriate. At the Center for Architecture, the Policy Coordinator will help develop and frame policy issues for public exhibitions, symposia and events. These events may also include annual Chapter functions that require updates on policy positions, such as the Annual Meeting each June and the Board of Directors Inaugural event in December.

The Policy Coordinator will also be in charge of internal outreach to AIA NY members on governmental affairs and policy issues. The coordinator will manage public programs with City Agencies for members and others in the industry, and write for the Center Newsletter and the advocacy section of the AIANY website. Experience with online communications and social networking channels is desired.

We are looking for an individual with excellent writing and communication skills. Experience with and knowledge of architecture, urban planning, and related fields is important, and experience with policy and political entities is essential. The New York City Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) is the nation's largest municipal housing preservation and development agency. Its mission is to promote quality housing and diverse, thriving neighborhoods for New Yorkers through loan and development programs for new affordable housing, preservation of the affordability of the existing housing stock, enforcement of housing quality standards, and educational programs for tenants and building owners. HPD is tasked with fulfilling the Mayor's Housing New York: A Five-Borough Ten-Year Plan to create and preserve 200,000 affordable units for New Yorkers at the very lowest incomes to those in the middle class.

Job Description:

The Department of Housing Preservation and Development seeks a highly motivated individual with exceptional communication skills to lead HPD's Office of Governmental Relations. The Office of Governmental Relations works with City, State and Federal elected officials, as well as agencies, policy makers, advocates, and planners to assess, craft, and secure legislative changes needed to implement HPD's goals of creating and preserving affordable housing and protecting the quality and safety of the City's housing stock.

Under the direction of the Deputy Commissioner of Strategy, Research and Communications, the Assistant Commissioner of Governmental Relations and his/her team also are responsible for working with elected officials, community boards, and other external stakeholders on both housing policy, land use and housing finance approvals and constituents housing problems, and preparing the Commissioner and senior staff for public legislative hearings and meetings with elected officials. The Assistant Commissioner plays a critical role in implementing the Mayors Housing New York plan, working closely with the Agency's senior team, Agency partners, and the Mayor's Office.

The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Work closely and collaboratively with senior staff to develop, draft, advocate for, and implement HPDs local, State, and federal legislative agenda.
  • Work with the New York City Council on land use and tax exemption approvals necessary for the Agency's housing projects.
  • Analyze and research proposed legislation and recommend appropriate agency response.

  • Manage agency relations with housing advocacy groups as it relates to legislative initiatives, in close coordination with other divisions across the Agency and the Mayor's Office.
  • Responsible for special projects assigned by the Deputy Commissioner of Strategy, Research, and Communications as needed.

OVERVIEW:

The Manager for Policy and Legislation is directly responsible for the day-to-day execution of ABA’s legislative agenda, supported by the V.P. of Government Affairs & Policy (GAP). The Manager is jointly responsible for developing ABA policy initiatives, establishing policy priorities and developing and executing strategies to achieve policy objectives through the legislative process.

SUPERVISION:
Supervision is received from, and directly reports to, the Vice President, Government Affairs and Policy (GAP).

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Policy
  • Provide support to the Vice President by providing: research, analysis, and identification of policy opportunities and develop help prepare policy initiatives in support of ABA members and the motorcoach, tour and travel industry.
  • Support the development and execution of legislative strategies to achieve policy objectives, using all GAP resources, to manage and achieve both short term and long term policy priorities.
  • Engage with, and maintain knowledge of, motorcoach, tour and travel industry, in support of developing and achieving policy objectives.
  • Identify resources in support of policy development and execution.
  • Prepare briefing materials concerning policy initiatives, for purposes of executing strategy and providing education.
  • Collaborate with other GAP functions, identifying opportunities and addressing concerns, to achieve policy priorities
  • Assist in developing the Government Affairs and Policy budget.
Legislation
  • Assist in the development, execution and management of advocacy efforts with the Federal Legislative Branch.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire one full-time employee to help advance the agency’s engagement with state and local elected officials and contribute to the agency’s legislative tracking and reporting activities. The position will be filled at the Associate level. Compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is the region’s official comprehensive planning organization. Its GO TO 2040 plan is helping the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois to implement strategies that address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues. 

Position Description The ideal candidate for this position will be able to monitor state legislative activity and communicate about the implementation of GO TO 2040 and development of the next longrange plan with a wide variety of audiences. The government relations associate will understand the agency’s policies and principles related to transportation, land use, tax policy, economic development, housing, the environment, and other quality-of-life issues. Applying knowledge of CMAP’s core policy principles, the associate will track state legislation and activity and develop related reports. 

The government relations associate will serve as a liaison to state and local elected officials and other agency stakeholders. This position will require communication with a variety of elected officials and partners at public venues and in individual meetings. The position may also be asked to contribute to other CMAP activities, including but not limited to the development of the region’s next long-range comprehensive plan, due in October 2018. Other responsibilities as directed by the supervisor. 

This position requires travel throughout the region and state, including some evening, weekend, and multi-day travel; candidate must have the ability and willingness to work with communities across the region. 

Responsibilities Essential functions of this position are to:
 • Manage and support CMAP’s legislative tracking and legislative review processes.
 • Possess working knowledge of the Illinois General Assembly legislative procedures. 
 • Author memos and develop reports detailing legislative activity.
 • Represent the agency and communicate CMAP’s policies, processes, and programs.
