Position Summary

The Peer Harm Reduction Support Champion Intervention Study is a CDC-funded research project that aims to train people who do not use drugs but know someone who does on how to help that person access available harm reduction tools and services, in order to increase access to these tools and services and to reduce the likelihood of overdose. It also aims to reduce substance use-related stigma and increase peer support. The Hourly Research Associate I for the project will engage in research/outreach activities with a focus on community outreach to faith-based organizations in the Austin and West Garfield Park communities. This individual will work closely with our community partners (COIP and the West Side Heroin and Opioid Task Force) as they conduct community outreach for the research project.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person assistance to our community partners and community outreach consultants as they travel throughout the community to engage in networking and relationship-building with faith-based organizations and other service-provision organizations in the Austin and Garfield Park communities
  • Visit faith-based organizations and senior centers in the Austin and Garfield Park communities to discuss the research project with organization leaders and to conduct recruitment of research study participants
  • Regularly update database to document our interactions with each community organization
  • Provide weekly updates (via email and/or in Zoom meetings) to the research team on community outreach efforts
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in social science or related field required.
    • Knowledge of fundamental research concepts, practices and procedures.
    • Entry level knowledge of research methods.
    • Have a flexible schedule to accommodate the scheduling needs of church leadership with whom outreach will be conducted (including availability to work up to 2 Sundays per month)
    • Have familiarity with and comfort visiting the Austin and/or West Garfield Park communities
    •  Comfort speaking with church leadership about the general goals of the intervention project and research study


    Preferred Qualifications
    • One year of prior experience in community engagement for public service, public health intervention, program implementation, or research

    Research Associate, Data Governance and Privacy - Hybrid (Washington, D.C.)

     The Data Governance and Privacy Practice Area is seeking a full-time research associate who will be responsible for helping manage and conduct research and technical assistance related to data privacy, statistical methods, and quantitative research. Areas of study include statistical data privacy, statistical modeling, survey analysis, and quantitative analysis on economic issues. The position will also contribute and potentially lead the development of proposals, responses to solicitations, and other business cultivation activities related to statistical data privacy. The ideal candidate will bring subject matter expertise in statistical data privacy, a solid track record of conducting moderately complex statistical data privacy methods, strong written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in R programming.

    What You’ll Do:

    • Conducting research that harnesses technology, data science, and statistical methods, including data imputation, synthetic data generation, and formal privacy, to answer questions about practical social and economic policy topics.

    • Contributing to the development of proposals, responses to solicitations and other meaningful business cultivation activities.

    • Assembling and analyzing complex data, completing sophisticated programming tasks, and debugging programming problems using R, familiarity with Stata is a plus.

    • Analyzing data using techniques and platforms such as big data, machine learning, and cloud computing technology.

    • Developing open-source R packages for data science and statistical methods via distributed version control with Git and GitHub.

    • Using statistical knowledge to create insights from data.

    • Taking the initiative to suggest improvements or innovations of methods or processes.

    • Working with confidential administrative data that requires a background investigation.

    • Co-authoring research reports, briefs, blogs, presentations, visualizations, and other written materials for external audiences.

    • Supporting overall project management and team performance including directly managing assistants and analysts; monitoring project progress, budget, and schedule; and implementing strategies to successfully complete project tasks.

    • Communicating, educating, and translating complex data privacy concepts to various stakeholders.

    Who You Are:

    The successful candidate will have:

    • Possess a Master’s with at least 3 years of experience in Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Economics, or a related field.

    • Hold a Ph.D. (preferred) or possess equivalent combination of education and experience.

    • Be a U.S. citizen or have the ability to obtain a federal government clearance.

    • Experience assembling and analyzing complex data.

    • Advanced knowledge of statistical and econometrics methods, especially in statistical data privacy.

    • Ability to apply and implement research principles and goals into R code.

    • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing deadlines.

    • Ability to communicate complex data privacy concepts effectively to various stakeholders through clear and concise messaging, education, and translation through multiple communication mediums, such as blogs, research reports, and technical briefs.

    • Interest in domestic economic and social policy issues.

    • Demonstrated ability to think strategically about a research and policy agenda, interact with staff at all levels, work independently and on team projects, and assist with project management agendas and business development efforts.

    RESEARCH ASSOCIATE

    The Research Associate will write long-term research reports on public policy and finance issues, monitor state and local government meetings, and communicate research findings to media, elected officials, and key stakeholders. 

    Responsibilities

    • Analyze state and local government budgetary, public policy, and financial documents, including government revenue trends, appropriations data, personnel data, and pension fund trends; 
    • Partner with other staff in composition of annual government budget analyses, other annual reports and blog posts; 
    • Act as lead researcher for non-recurring long-term research projects on a variety of government finance, operations, and policy issues; 
    • Monitor government legislative meetings as needed, reporting findings back to staff; and 
    • Monitor governments by tracking legislation and current events as they pertain to financial and related policy issues or other ongoing research projects;

    Qualifications 

    • Graduate degree in public policy, journalism, public administration, political science, business, economics, law, or related field or 2+ years relevant work experience; 
    • Strong interest in government and public policy; 
    • Superior writing skills, including summarizing, formatting and proofreading; 
    • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; 
    • Excellent critical analysis skills, especially of financial data;

    Position Summary

    The Othering and Belonging Institute (“the Institute”) at UC Berkeley brings together researchers, stakeholders, policymakers, and communicators to identify and challenge the barriers to an inclusive, just, and sustainable society and to create transformative change. The Institute is a vibrant hub of researchers, community leaders, policymakers, artists, and communicators that advances research, policy, and work related to marginalized communities. We engage in innovative narrative, communications, and cultural strategies that attempt to re- frame the public discourse around marginality and inclusion and respond to issues that require immediate and long-term action. Our work is informed by understanding how structures and systems work to create or exacerbate othering and exclusion.

    The Network for Transformative Change comprises multiple projects that aim to leverage the expertise and power of a cross-sector network to bring about innovations, knowledge, and strategies towards a society based on belonging. The Network looks both inward at the ways our social justice movements operate to help shape their work and outward at the population level to develop empirically grounded knowledge that can be translated into actionable interventions. Both domains strive to shape capacity, strategy, and innovations that will ultimately impact the infrastructure that sustains progress along the lines of our vision and values.

    The Blueprint for Belonging (B4B) is a project of the Network and partners with community based organizing and civic engagement groups to develop research based interventions that promote bridging across divides in an effort to expand belonging through greater civic engagement and power building. The B4B Research Associate position supports program across several strategies including qualitative research, trainings, research application, and partnership development. In addition to carrying out qualitative research such as facilitating focus groups and interviews, the position is responsible for managing projects and coordinating partnerships. This position relies on experience in social change movements and the public sector; judgement within parameters set by the Program Director and/or project specifics; ability to manage multiple workflows; and strong communication and analysis skills.

    Responsibilities

    • Carries out qualitative research and analysis; coordinates research activities with partners or vendors; and supports project management from scope setting to dissemination.
    • Develops and carries out case studies and trainings informed by OBI research and analysis.

    • Social change movement building experience in civic engagement or community organizing fields within the social justice sector.
    • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing for events, reports, presentations, and social media.
    • Ability carry out appropriate mixed methods research methodologies including facilitating focus groups, conducting interviews, conducting literature reviews, and synthesizing quantitative and qualitative data.
    • Project planning and management skills to support multiple projects at once.
    • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes while remaining flexible to rapidly changing priorities.
    • Excellent writing skills and ability to develop communications for academic and popular audiences including reports, briefs, concept papers, curriculum, or presentation slides.
    • Strong degree of political acumen, tact and follow-through when working with staff and community partners, including within projects designed to cross geographic, political, social, or economic divides.
    • Ability to travel across California and nationally.
    • Understanding of the social justice movement sector including prevailing analyses shaping the field.
    • Experience with digital dissemination and production strategies preferred.

    Salary & Benefits

    • This is a two-year, full-time (40 hours/week), Contract position, and eligible for full UC benefits. A contract renewal is possible after two years pending available funding.
    • Hourly pay range is $27.20 - $34.50 commensurate with experience and informed by our organizational equity-based salary scale.
