Position Summary

The Peer Harm Reduction Support Champion Intervention Study is a CDC-funded research project that aims to train people who do not use drugs but know someone who does on how to help that person access available harm reduction tools and services, in order to increase access to these tools and services and to reduce the likelihood of overdose. It also aims to reduce substance use-related stigma and increase peer support. The Hourly Research Associate I for the project will engage in research/outreach activities with a focus on community outreach to faith-based organizations in the Austin and West Garfield Park communities. This individual will work closely with our community partners (COIP and the West Side Heroin and Opioid Task Force) as they conduct community outreach for the research project.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide in-person assistance to our community partners and community outreach consultants as they travel throughout the community to engage in networking and relationship-building with faith-based organizations and other service-provision organizations in the Austin and Garfield Park communities
  • Visit faith-based organizations and senior centers in the Austin and Garfield Park communities to discuss the research project with organization leaders and to conduct recruitment of research study participants
  • Regularly update database to document our interactions with each community organization
  • Provide weekly updates (via email and/or in Zoom meetings) to the research team on community outreach efforts
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.
  • Minimum Qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in social science or related field required.
    • Knowledge of fundamental research concepts, practices and procedures.
    • Entry level knowledge of research methods.
    • Have a flexible schedule to accommodate the scheduling needs of church leadership with whom outreach will be conducted (including availability to work up to 2 Sundays per month)
    • Have familiarity with and comfort visiting the Austin and/or West Garfield Park communities
    •  Comfort speaking with church leadership about the general goals of the intervention project and research study


    Preferred Qualifications
    • One year of prior experience in community engagement for public service, public health intervention, program implementation, or research

Furthermore, this position writes reports and manages data as required by the principal investigator and will have the ability to lead projects and serve as a principal investigator or co-PI.  This position is funded from grant money and the expectation is that the chosen candidate will have the ability to add to the Center’s funding portfolio by creating their own research track while working collaboratively with the Center’s staff and faculty.  Relevant work experience in areas such as public transportation (micro-transit/micro-mobility), equity, and/or advances in transportation engineering such as autonomous (connected vehicles), and clean energy adoption.

    Description:

    The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences comprises the basic science disciplines within the UIC College of Pharmacy, which ranks in the top ten among US pharmacy schools.  The Grants and Contracts Associate will join a team of professional research administrators who manage the financial portfolios of the unit’s faculty members and trainees. Under administrative direction, the Associate will manage pre- and post-award functions across the grant lifecycle for Federal, State, local, and private sponsors. The position holder will liaise with UIC’s Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) and external entities to facilitate contract, subcontract, revenue generating, and other agreements and to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and sponsor guidelines.

     

    Duties:

    Pre-Award

    • Advise faculty members and trainees on potential research sponsors and targeted opportunities.
    • Review sponsor solicitations, assist in the preparation of budgets, and help compile other required elements of grant and contract proposals.
    • Help Principal Investigators (PIs) respond to Just-in-Time (JIT) requests from sponsors.
    • Assist PIs with the preparation of no funds agreements such as material transfer agreements (MTAs), confidential disclosure agreements (CDAs), etc.
    • Maintain and/or review Other Support, Biosketch, and other essential documentation.
    • Coordinate closely with the OSP Pre-Award to facilitate the submission of proposals and receipt of awards.

     

    Post-Award

    • Keep abreast of relevant University business policies and procedures and Federal, State, and sponsor regulations and guidelines.
    • Coordinate with OSP Post-Award on anticipation account and award setup, financial reports, major rebudgeting, cost transfers, cost share commitments, and closeouts in accordance with the terms and conditions of awards.
    • Develop and receive/issue incoming/outgoing sub-recipient packages and monitor billing/payment, performing risk assessments as necessary.
    • Monitor purchasing and other charges for allowability, both at the point of charge and during the monthly reconciliation process.
    • Assist PIs with the administrative aspects of progress and final reports.
    • Prepare comprehensive, monthly financial reports for PIs that enable long-term planning, particularly of research personnel and major equipment purchases
    • Prepare annual effort reports for certification by researchers

     

    Other

    • Manage the non-research accounts in individual PI portfolios: startup, ICR, gift, and revenue generating funds.
    • Collaborate with the Department’s administrative team to optimize and facilitate cross-functional business operations.
    • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.  

     

    Qualifications:

    • A Bachelor’s degree required, a Master’s degree preferred. Degree(s) should be in business administration, accounting, finance, economics or other field(s) related to the position responsibilities or Departmental research areas.
    • Certified Research Administrator (CRA) certification preferred.
    • Familiarity with biomedical sciences research environment and Federal sponsors (NIH, NSF) desirable.
    • Familiarity with UIC business systems (e.g. Banner, ChromeRiver) helpful but internal and external applicants welcome.
    • Demonstrated experience with pre- and/or post-award management preferred.
    • Exceptional organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Ability to work under pressure to manage workflow and meet deadlines.
    • Ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
