Our office is seeking to hire a Director of Zoning and Business Development. Ideal candidates will have a graduate degree in urban planning, architecture, or law, and 2 - 5 years work experience, preferably to include direct constituent/customer service.

Salary: Position available as full time or part time position. Salary to be determined after election, but starting at $50,000/year minimum.

Candidates should have some familiarity with the Lincoln Park, Old Town, and Gold Coast communities, and must be community-oriented as well as empathetic listeners.

Responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Managing a portfolio of zoning and development proposals review (ranging from minor zoning relief such as Administrative Adjustments and Variations, zoning map amendment processes, to large-scale Planned Developments). 
  • Overseeing Landmark affairs (permit reviews for new construction or renovation, new Landmark designations, etc.)
  • Advising the Alderman on policies, ordinances, and related legislative matters from the Department of Housing, Department of Planning, etc.
  • Interacting with personnel from City of Chicago planning, enforcement and licensing departments, as well as Zoning Board of Appeals, Plan Commission, Commission on Landmarks and Committee on Zoning
  • Leading community review processes for zoning and licensing matters (engaging with community stakeholders, neighborhood associations, other residents, etc.)
  • Primary business liaison for 43rd Ward office (loading zones, licenses, etc.), close collaboration with Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce
  • Other duties as required

At a minimum, candidates must have a Bachelor's Degree and be working towards a Master's Degree in Urban Planning or Public Policy. Other essential characteristics include:

  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong written communication skills. 
  • Occasional public testifying before the Zoning Board of Appeals, Commission on Chicago Landmarks, Committee on Zoning, or Plan Commission on behalf of the Alderman is required. Excellent verbal communication skills are required.

Primary tasks:
  • Identify opportunities and develop relationships to secure work with ideal developer clients; this may include local preservation, community development, and economic development officials as well as potential clients. 
  • Interpret and communicate requirements of federal and state historic tax credit programs to clients and potential clients. 
  • Prepare proposals including custom scopes of work and budgets.

Urban Planner, Sustainable and Resilient Cities – RTI (Durham, NC)

What: The Urban Planner for Sustainable and Resilient Cities will be a key member of a team responsible for developing our emerging sustainable and resilient cities practice. Overview/Purpose
North Branch Works is a non-profit, community based economic development agency that works with industry and businesses located in four industrial corridors on Chicago’s north side to maintain stable and growing business corridors that retain and expand jobs for area residents. Responsibilities
  • Become conversant in and effectively market public and private business assistance programs available through NBW and our partner organizations such as OCS Micro Loan program, SomerCor-SBIF, TIF Works, BCAP, IMEC, etc.; 
  • Conduct outreach to firms in our service area to explore/obtain/explain issues related to business retention/expansion; work with company leadership to resolve issues resulting in retention that supports private investment and job creation;

  • Work with Executive Director and Director of Finance to prepare and submit LIRI contract budget and workplan documents in coordination with DPD. 
  • Track and report monthly and quarterly progress on LIRI contract related to goals of the program including: business outreach, economic development programs, and real estate listings for our area. 
  • Work with the local real-estate community to market space in our area and address expansion/relocation needs of area businesses. 
  • Update NBW’s website with business incentives, real estate, membership info, events, and other relevant info as needed. 
  • Update social media by tweeting and making Facebook posts at least once a week and as needed. 
  • Help create and plan networking events, business workshops and fundraisers. 
Qualifications
  • BA or BS in business administration, social services, urban planning, or related field and 3-5 years work experience or MS; 
  • Emphasis on excellent sales and market skills, self-starter and ability to work independently and as a team member;

NATURE OF WORK:This position performs responsible professional work to assist in the development and implementation of City of Evanston economic development programs and projects that support commercial, office, and industrial businesses and development activities. Work for this position is primarily focused to include business retention of existing Evanston businesses, with a focus on retail business. Additional work includes conducting marketing and business attraction work associated with bringing nationally recognized commercial businesses as well as supporting the innovation and development of new locally-based businesses. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
Must possess a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in planning, public administration, or business with a focus on real estate and/or economics or similar discipline. Master’s degree is preferred.

Must possess two (2) or more years of progressively responsible economic development based work experience including economic development research experience. Possession of two (2) or more years of experience working for a local chamber of commerce, business district improvement area, special service area, or related municipal position in which job responsibilities involved direct contact with business districts and individual businesses is preferred.

Must possess a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities in the following areas:
• Knowledge of marketing, communications, and public relations, with experience in outreach and communications to a broad base audience.
• Innovative, self-motivated, creative, resourceful and independent thinking; Strong problem solving skills with an ability to quickly assess the issues and challenges and begin to develop alternative solutions for preferred economic development projects and programs.

About the Position
Under general direction from the Community Development Director, performs complex professional level assignments for the Economic Development Division involving research, design, implementation, and monitoring of programs encouraging economic development in the City of San Carlos.
