Manager, Data and Research, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago

Who: YWCA Metropolitan Chicago

What: The Manager, Research and Evaluation is responsible for the development, planning, and production of policy reports and research briefs, including the annual Illinois KIDS COUNT data book, that focus on understanding women’s, children’s, and families’ needs across multiple and intersecting axes of difference. The Manager, Research and Evaluation will design and manage internal- and external-facing research projects; update the KIDS COUNT Data Center; support YWCA Metropolitan Chicago teams in maintaining logic models, reporting, and evaluation protocols; and present research findings and best practices to internal and external audiences. The Manager will help the organization achieve its objectives of data-driven policy advocacy and services that enable inclusive marketplace transformation.

Responsibilities:

Research Design and Implementation: Collect, track and analyze relevant data from national organizations, federal agencies, state agencies, YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, and other sources to evaluate trends regarding the well-being of women, families, and children. Responsible for staying up-to-date on external research relevant to YWCA’s work, working with VP, Policy, Research, & Evaluation to identify opportunities for collaboration and innovative research projects. Analyze data and research reports with special attention to demographics, including race, ethnicity, gender, age, location, and other axes of identity. Disaggregate data as needed to understand trends and policies’ effects across these identities. Produce compelling and clear data visualizations and analyses for internal and external audiences as needed, using R, Tableau, and/or ArcGIS. Collaborate with the VP, Policy, Research, & Evaluation, and other YWCA teams to develop topic, argument, and plan for annual KIDS COUNT report production. Implement plan for producing KIDS COUNT report, regularly updating Strategic Engagement team on progress. (40%)

Strategic Communications: Develop and deliver in-person and virtual presentations to share research findings with internal and external audiences, including YWCA teams, partner organizations, coalitions, and policymakers. Tailor presentations to address specific concerns of audience. Produces and shares data resources and data visualizations to other YWCA teams and partners as needed. Write policy briefs, research reports, and blog posts presenting findings from these data analyses, explaining the importance of understanding this information for driving meaningful public policy change. Write concise, clear, and compelling narratives that explain research findings to non-expert and expert audiences alike. Serve as the staff liaison to the Annie E. Casey Foundation’s national KIDS COUNT project. Represent YWCA in media (print, TV, radio, etc.) around publication of national and state KIDS COUNT reports. (30%)

Data Management: Update the KIDS COUNT Data Center regularly. Support education about database management and research best practices across YWCA, aiding in the maintenance of logic models and regular research and evaluation updates across the organization. (15%)

Organizational Data Analytics: Collaborate with the VP, Policy, Research, & Evaluation to design annual report for YWCA, as well as annual reports for YWCA service areas. Support review of internal and external data (qualitative and quantitative) to evaluate YWCA’s services’ effects on individuals, communities, and the marketplace. Contribute knowledge about data disaggregation best practices, as well as key systemic and policy contributors to inequities, to reporting and grant proposal development for Policy, Research, & Evaluation team and YWCA teams more broadly. (15%)


Qualifications:

Familiarity with US Census Bureau American Community Survey data and US Census Bureau Public Use Microdata Sample data. Experience using R, SPSS, STATA, Tableau, or other statistical analysis/data visualization software. A minimum of three to five years relevant work experience.

Transportation Post-Doc - UNC Chapel Hill

Who: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

What: Applications are invited for an outstanding postdoctoral scholar to join the Department of City and Regional Planning working under the direction of Prof. Noreen McDonald at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The postdoctoral scholar will conduct research on transportation planning and policy. Current funded research areas include 1) changing travel patterns, 2) paratransit and technology-enabled shared mobility, 3) land use planning implications of urban freight growth, and 4) links between road safety and shared mobility. The postdoctoral scholar will be expected to significantly contribute across several projects through research design, data collection, data analysis, manuscript development, and manage project staff including doctoral, master’s, and undergraduate students. Several opportunities to be involved in peer-reviewed journal publications are anticipated. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to engage with intellectual opportunities across UNC.

The candidate must hold a PhD in city and regional planning, civil engineering, public policy, or related discipline. Experience conducting research on transportation planning or policy issues is essential. Successful candidates will also demonstrate strong training in quantitative analysis and statistical approaches along with knowledge of research design. Experience with big data or novel data science applications, e.g. text mining, is a plus.

Economic & Statistical Analyst - Fairfax County, VA

Who: Fairfax County, Office of Management & Budget

What: The Analyst serves as an advanced technical specialist and expert for demographic, economic and statistical research. Conducts research and analyses to support countywide need for land use, demographic, social and economic information. Manages and conducts all aspects of research and analyses processes to include problem definition; research design; primary and secondary data collection; data analysis; and report writing. Develops, utilizes, updates and documents complex computerized models, databases, methodologies and statistical tools for obtaining, analyzing and creating land use, demographic, social and economic information and forecasts. Utilizes advanced software such as SAS, R, ArcGIS, SQL and Microsoft Power BI to conduct spatial and statistical analyses and to summarize information. Considers the uses and potential uses by multiple clients to determine the appropriate information needed as well as the appropriate formats for disseminating data (e.g., reports, statistical tables, graphics, maps, Internet products, and databases). Designs and develops materials and approaches for disseminating conclusions and products to decision-makers, planners and the public. Designs, creates and updates web pages. Serves as trainer/mentor to build technical research and analysis capacity in others. As part of the selection process, candidates may be asked to complete written exercises and provide work samples.

Research Associate - Heartland Alliance

Who: Heartland Alliance - Research and Policy Division.
Heartland Alliance informs public policy decisions and advances solutions to improve opportunities and quality of life for people experiencing inequity, living in poverty, and facing danger.  Heartland Alliance’s Research & Policy Division engages in research on social issues and solutions, policy and systems change, and field building nationwide. The division is home to the Social IMPACT Research Center , Heartland Alliance’s Policy & Advocacy team Heartland Alliance’s National Initiatives on Economic Opportunity.

What: The Social IMPACT Research Center conducts applied research for Heartland Alliance, other nonprofits, foundations, advocacy groups, governments, coalitions, and the media to help them measure, inform, and grow their social impact. IMPACT also regularly reports on key poverty trends to equip decision makers with sound data to inform public policy.The Research Associate is responsible for assisting the implementation of program evaluations and research studies and related projects.
