ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COORDINATOR
The Village of Winnetka is seeking an Economic Development Coordinator—a position recently converted from part-time to full-time. Under the direction of the Assistant Village Manager, the Economic Development Coordinator is responsible for developing, guiding, and administering the Village’s economic development and business relations functions. The position emphasizes business development (existing business retention/expansion and new business recruitment), marketing/branding activities, and special events. The Economic Development Coordinator is a key liaison to the Winnetka business community and will play an important role in the implementation of Winnetka’s Downtown Master Plan. The position requires experience and expertise in developing strategies to create a sustainable long-term commercial base and to promote the community’s vision of its three business districts.
Desired Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in urban planning; commercial real estate; public administration; business administration; or a closely related field.
4 years progressively responsible related work experience, preferably in a municipal economic development or planning consultant environment.
Economic Developer Certification desirable.
Other Requirements:
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Ability to provide excellent customer service and work effectively with business owners and tenants, developers, citizens, elected officials, and staff.
Knowledge of principles and practices of business, real estate, and land use.
Knowledge of business mathematics, statistics, and research methodology.
Good organizational and prioritization skills.
Experience in developing and deploying marketing strategies and tools.
Ability to maintain and protect confidential information.
Valid driver’s license and safe driving skills.
The weekly work schedule is normally 37.5 hours in duration, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., but may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, workload, administrative obligations, or work in progress. This position requires occasional evening or weekend work in conjunction with meetings of the Village Council, Business Community Development Commission, Chamber of Commerce, or other groups. Work activities are typically conducted in a climate-controlled open office environment and noise levels are usually quiet.
This is an exempt position. Salary range: $65,000 to $99,988 (DOQ), plus excellent benefits.
The Village of Winnetka (population 12,200) is an established North Shore suburban community, located approximately 20 miles north of Chicago, with a Council-Manager form of government. The Village has a land area of 3.81 square miles, and there are three business districts: Indian Hill, Elm Street, and Hubbard Woods. The community recently completed its first Downtown Master Plan, which is being considered by the Council for adoption. Approximately $500,000 has been budgeted in FY2017 to facilitate implementation of the high priority recommendations from the Downtown Master Plan. In addition to the Downtown Master Plan Steering Committee, the Village has a Business Community Development Commission and is a Platinum Member/Sponsor of the Winnetka-Northfield Chamber of Commerce.

World Business Chicago is seeking a Deputy Director for the Plan for Economic Growth and Jobs. This position will serve to support the Executive Director of the Plan, provide day-to-day guidance to the Plan Team in their work, and connect with partner initiatives in their work to extend the impact of the Plan. The Deputy Director is a full-time position that reports to the Executive Director of the Plan.
Primary Responsibilities
- Support the Plan Executive Director in the internal guidance of Plan implementation, including:
- Ensure alignment of the Plan with overall WBC and Board objectives
- Guidance to staff on the execution of annual work programs and 3-5 year goals of the Plan
- Preparing for regular meetings with the Plan Team, Plan Program Staff, and WBC Fellows including project prioritization, status updates, strategy and initiative level problem-solving
- Meet with Staff, Interns via intensive weekly meetings to provide guidance on their work
- Ongoing guidance on development of Plan catalytic initiatives
- Day-to-day guidance to Plan Staff in development of Plan projects
- Day-to-day oversight of the Technical Assistance Program
- Serve as internal PoC for other WBC Business Units and internal WBC administrative development as it relates to the Plan
- Deployment and use of CRM (Salesforce) within Plan Team
- Support the Plan Executive Director guiding staff on external reporting on progress to Plan Steering Committee, Co-chairs, and WBC Board
- Provide ongoing project development guidance to soon-to-be ‘spin-out’ initiatives to ensure continued success (development assistance with business plan, communications plan, financial plan, leadership needs)
- Serve as a liaison to Plan initiative portfolio and develop successful working partnerships with ‘spun-out’ initiatives (i.e. mHub, Current, SINC, etc) and provide strategic guidance on continuing initiative development

- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide range of individuals within and outside of WBC
- Broad base of knowledge and skills related to building effective partnerships
- Excellent operations leadership skills
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly communicate to all levels of management
- Advanced strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload in order to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced and dynamic work environment
- Detail oriented with a high level of energy and a “can-do” attitude
- Entrepreneurial approach is a must, and experience working in a start-up environment with evolving priorities and processes preferred
- Strong interpersonal written/verbal communications skills
- A passion for civic engagement that makes a difference for the region’s future
- A good sense of diplomacy in dealing with confidential information
Qualifications
The ideal candidate has a minimum of 7-10 years of experience in a leadership role related to business development or economic planning, and has distinctive project management skills. The candidate should also have extensive experience working with a wide range of staff levels, possess excellent written and oral communication skills, and have relevant expertise and experience in economic growth (economics, public sector work, workforce development, entrepreneurship, SME business growth, cluster strategies, infrastructure development for economic development, etc.). Distinctive problem structuring and execution skills, including experience establishing strategic plans, creating standard operating procedures, and managing programs and program budgets, desired. Relevant graduate degree or equivalent work experience preferred. IEDC certification or equivalent preferred.
