Publicity Promotion Specialist (Energy Conscious Campus progam) - UIC Office of Sustainability

Who: The University of Illinois at Chicago, Office of Sustainability is seeking to fill a Publicity-Promotion Specialist position (37.5 hours/week).

What: Under administrative direction, the Publicity-Promotion Specialist develops and oversees the Energy Conscious Campus program, publicizing and promoting this social marketing initiative to create behavior change in the campus community to reduce energy consumption. The Specialist will develop, implement, and measure the success of the Energy Conscious Campus Marketing Plan whose goal is to achieve and maintain a 1.5% reduction in campus energy use. They will also take complex energy consumption data and greenhouse gas emissions data and translate it into informational material that is understandable by faculty, staff, students, and the general public. They will use various media to communicate the information – oral, graphic, written and electronic. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Develop Energy Conscious Campus Marketing Plan (20%)  
    • Using best practices for social marketing develop a comprehensive, campus-wide energy conservation campaign to include a strong and consistent message to the campus community 
  • Implement Energy Conscious Campus Marketing Plan (40%)  
    • Create behavior change by actively training and educating building occupants on how to shift habits into a more energy conscious manner; plan and schedule programming and event coverage, coordinate promotional activities between departments; may oversee students and/or volunteers associated with events or programs 
  • Measure Energy Conscious Campus Marketing Plan (10%)  
    • Evaluate energy data provided by campus utilities to ascertain the success of the program whose goal is to achieve annual reduction of 1.5% in campus energy consumption 
  • Communicate energy consumption data (20%)  
    • Take complex energy consumption data and greenhouse gas emissions data and translate it into informational material that is understandable by faculty, staff, students, and the general public. 
    • Write articles for the office newsletter, prepare content for website, and provide information to UIC Public and Government Affairs. 
  • Research best practices (5%)  
    • Research and apply appropriate marketing media and methods to create campaigns that result in actions and behavior change by campus community 
  • Other duties as assigned (5%) 
    • Participate in Office of Sustainability outreach initiatives and special projects and perform related duties as assigned. 
Qualifications: High school graduation or equivalent, and any one of the following:
  • Bachelor’s degree in public relations, advertising , marketing , communications , organizational leadership, graphic design or other closely related field.
  • Combination totaling three (3) years (36 months) from the following categories:
    • 60 semester hours or an Associate’s degree equals one (1) year (12 months) 
    • 90 semester hours e quals two (2) years (24 months) 
    • 120 semester hours or a Bachelor’s degree equals three (3) years (36 months) 
    • Progressively more responsible professional experience in areas such as, communications, promotions, public relations, marketing, journalism, sales and/or the preparation of advertising materials for mass media or other closely related field.
