Transportation Planner - Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission

Who: The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission has an immediate opening for a entry level engineer or planner with an interest in transportation planning. The Commission conducts area-wide system level highway, transit, and bicycle facilities planning for a seven county Region, and facility and corridor-level traffic engineering and transportation planning for local governments. Current work efforts include transit development plans for public transit operators in the Region; the regional transportation plan and improvement program development; public transit/human services coordination plans; refinement of travel demand models and development of advanced and experimental travel demand models; and traffic engineering studies.

MPO Senior Planner - Transportation (Santa Fe)

What: MPO Planner to develop and manage projects related to regional transportation, demographic trends, and MPO contracts. Essential functions include:

CMAP Executive - Deputy Executive Director for Policy and Programming

Who: Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

What: CMAP seeks a Deputy Executive Director for Policy and Programming to manage a large department and provide strategic direction for CMAP’s policy development and analysis activities, with an emphasis on performance-based programming for the region’s transportation investments. As a member of CMAP’s executive management team, this person will work closely with the CMAP Executive Director, Chief of Staff, Deputy Executive Directors, Directors, and Principals on overall strategic initiatives, the allocation of resources, implementation of CMAP’s ON TO 2050 plan, and compliance with federal transportation planning requirements. The Will County Governmental League (WCGL), one of the metropolitan Chicago regional Councils of Government (COGs) is seeking applications for the position of Programs Coordinator. This entry level, full-time position will be engaged in the WCGL’s Transportation and Member programs. The WCGL represents 32 member communities in one of the fastest growing counties in the country. Will County is located approximately 40 miles southwest of Chicago, has an area of 837 square miles, and a population of over 750,000.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting in managing the WCGL Surface Transportation Program (STP), Will Electric Aggregation Group, and Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). Managing the STP program includes supervising the preparation and processing of League members applications for federal funding, recommending priorities for various federally funded projects and maintaining records on STP funds allocated to and expended by the League through the program.

The WCGL runs the largest municipal electric aggregation program in Illinois, the Programs Coordinator will provide staff and technical support to members of the Will Electric Aggregation Group and the WCGL Utilities Committee. This position will serve as a point of contact for the Will Electric Aggregation Program for elected officials, WCGL members and the general public.

The WCGL is responsible for the programming of all federal and state funded transportation projects in the regions Transportation Improvement Program (TIP). The Programs Coordinator will assist in active program management for projects in the TIP. The position will regularly coordinate with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) to keep the TIP accurate and projects on schedule.

This position will also be responsible for primary staffing of the WCGL’s Public Works Training Program. The Programs Coordinator will organize local and web based training opportunities related to public works and transportation.

A degree in planning, public administration, political science, or related field required. Knowledge of regional transportation and planning related issues desired, local knowledge helpful. Strong organizational skills with the ability to multi-task are essential to success in this position. Regional travel required. This is an entry-level position with a compensation package based on the individual qualifications of the candidate.

The Western Connecticut Council of Governments (WestCOG) seeks a qualified person to serve as a (Transportation) Planner and/or (Regional Services) Project Manager. The employee may be stationed in one or both of WestCOG’s offices (in Brookfield and Stamford).
Job responsibilities may evolve over time but initially are expected to include:
  • Management of a regional transportation program (MPO), and
  • Development of local and regional transportation studies and plans; and/or
  • Identification of opportunities for regional efficiencies and cost savings, and
  • Development, implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of shared services multiple municipalities; and
  • Other tasks as assigned
The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with:
  • Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPO)
  • Regional transportation planning
  • Multimodal transportation
  • Regional government
  • Local and regional government (all departments and functions)
  • Experience with purchasing, procurement, contracting, negotiations, staffing, service delivery, and program and project management
  • Familiarity with local government in Connecticut
S/he should have a Bachelor’s degree in (Master’s preferred) from an accredited university in one of the following or a relevant field:
  • Planning
  • Geography
  • Information systems
  • Operations management
  • Management science
  • Public administration
  • Transportation engineering
  • Logistics
In addition to at least one year of relevant experience (more preferred).
The ideal candidate will have a high level of proficiency in:
  • Spoken and written English
  • Mathematics and statistics
  • Information technology and information systems
The ideal candidate will be quick on his or her feet, be an innovative and creative thinker, and be highly motivated, affable, and reliable.

Position will be filled at the Assistant/Associate/Junior/Senior Planner level, or as a Project Manager, and corresponding salary of $45,000-$70,000, depending on qualifications. Benefits are available.

The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking a highly qualified executive with demonstrated success in leading regional transportation and/or comprehensive planning efforts to serve as CMAP’s next Executive Director. 
CMAP is the comprehensive regional planning agency for metropolitan Chicago that also serves as the region’s federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO).  A nationally recognized, innovative agency, CMAP coordinates strategies to help the region’s 284 communities and seven counties address transportation, housing, economic development, open space and environmental issues. CMAP is governed by a 15-member Board comprised of City of Chicago, county, and municipal elected and appointed officials. 
The Executive Director reports directly to the CMAP Board and MPO Policy Committee, which have joint responsibility for approving the regional transportation plan.  CMAP was initiated in 2006 by state legislation and is a recognized model of non-partisan regional cooperation.  The agency has had one Executive Director since its inception and has 100 full-time employees.  The CMAP staff is highly respected throughout the region for the high caliber of reports they generate.  The next Executive Director can expect to guide the agency's implementation of GO TO 2040, the comprehensive regional plan unanimously adopted in 2010.  In addition, CMAP will begin the planning process for the region's 2050 plan. The next Executive Director will be a skilled leader and manager who is passionate about regional cooperation, with the ability to build consensus and continue the integration of planning for land use and transportation that CMAP has successfully established.
Experience in transportation and urban policy development as well as knowledge of state and federal funding mechanisms is important.  Candidates must have strong oral and written skills, media skills and the ability to build effective relationships throughout the region and with state leaders.
