Job Description

This is a unique transportation planning position that will focus primarily on assisting the City of Trenton and Mercer County to advance Complete Streets by implementing a number of plans and initiatives that they have developed over the last several years. Federal Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSAA) funds are being used to create this position and provide technical and staff support to implement the forthcoming bike plan, trails plan, the Trenton Complete Streets Design Handbook and other existing initiatives like Vision Zero.

Director of Transportation, Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission

Who: Northwestern Indiana Regional Planning Commission

What: The Director of Transportation will head up the development and implementation of NIRPC’s transportation framework and ensure that NIRPC meets all its Federally required responsibilities as an MPO in surface transportation and public transit. The position will oversee the staff responsible for all aspects of transportation planning, and will facilitate stakeholder committees pertaining to technical, financial, and other aspects of regional transportation planning and project management. Responsible for the Long Range Transportation Plan as inculcated in NWI 2050, the Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), and other federal MPO requirements, the Director of Transportation will respond to internal and external inquiries pertaining to transportation planning; will be responsible for quality of transportation team products; will develop and enhance performance metrics/measurements; will lead and direct the work of transportation planning staff; will ensure efficient and effective use of transportation planning funds; will problem-solve obstacles to efficient project delivery; will collaborate with transit funding recipients to ensure equitable allocations of available funding; will carry out NIRPC’s Title VI program and address environmental justice concerns; and will be the go-to strategic point person for all transportation-related projects.

Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum educational accomplishment is a bachelor’s degree in urban or regional planning, or a related discipline such as public policy or transportation engineering.  Master’s degree and AICP certification, particularly with Advanced Specialty Certification in Transportation, are strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of eight years of successful experience in transportation planning (or land use planning with a strong transportation component), preferably with a regional or local government. Additional experience may compensate for a lack of a master’s degree.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or experience with Federal Highway Administration and Federal Transit Administration programs desired.
  • At least five years of the relevant experience should be in a supervisory capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead effectively with strengths in adaptive management and mentoring.
  • Strong customer and public service ethic.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including group facilitation abilities and collaborative aptitude among multiple parties.
  • Demonstrated understanding of transportation planning principles and federal duties and obligations of Metropolitan Planning Organizations.
  • Exceptional skills and aptitude in project management and public administration, including budgeting, project staffing, and coordination of work activities.

Program Associate for Transportation - The Northwest Municipal Conference (DesPlaines)

Who: The Northwest Municipal Conference (NWMC), a council of government representing forty-three municipalities and one township in the north and northwest suburbs, is seeking a motivated, responsible, energetic individual for the position of Program Associate for Transportation.

What: The Program Associate for Transportation coordinates transportation planning and programming activities on behalf of NWMC members, assists with project management on regional studies, provides assistance to members in preparing transportation grant applications for federal and state programs and acts as a liaison for members to various federal, state, county and regional transportation agencies. The responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following activities:
  • Represent the needs of NWMC members to the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP), the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and other transportation and planning agencies. 
  • Manage the Surface Transportation Program (STP) for the North Shore Council of Mayors, including oversight of project funding and implementation. 
  • Monitor transportation programs including the Congestion Mitigation & Air Quality Program (CMAQ), the Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP), Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), Local Technical Assistance Program and the Community Planning Program to ensure municipal access and understanding.

Planner II: Plan Review - Metropolitan Nashville Planning Department

Rideshare/TDM Program Coordinator - Madison, WI (CLOSES 4/1)

Who: City of Madison, WI - Planning Department

What: The Rideshare/TDM Program Coordinator is responsible for carrying out the day-to-day management of the Rideshare Etc. Program, which promotes alternatives to driving alone. The program serves commuters in a 48-county area of central and southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The goal of the program is to reduce congestion and pollution and to help provide commuters travel options and personal transportation cost savings.
This position also supports the urban and regional transportation planning work of the Regional Transportation Planning Services Section of the City's Planning Division, which staffs the Madison Area Transportation Planning Board (MATPB) – A Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The work involves direct contacts with potential program participants and working with regional employers and state and local agency staff involved in transportation demand management (TDM)/ridesharing promotion activities and programs. The work also involves development and implementation of marketing and public outreach activities to promote commute options.

Associate Policy Analyst - The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning

Who: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is our region’s official comprehensive planning organization. The agency and its partners are implementing ON TO 2050, a new long-range comprehensive regional plan, to help the seven counties and 284 communities of northeastern Illinois address transportation, housing, economic development, open space, environmental, and other quality-of-life issues.

What: CMAP is hiring an Associate Policy Analyst who will support its economic development and regional planning efforts. The policy analyst will advance inclusive growth, resilience, and prioritized investment in the region through policy research and writing, public speaking, and stakeholder engagement. The position will also support transportation programming and local technical assistance projects.
The position will focus on developing actionable strategies for regional economic and workforce development, as well as encouraging their implementation with partners. Tasks will include managing research, collecting and analyzing data, and effectively communicating recommendations orally and in writing. This position will also monitor and provide direction regarding federal, state, and local public policy on issues highlighted in ON TO 2050. The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate a broad understanding of the interactions between infrastructure, land use, and public policy, with a concentration on the region’s economic, industrial, demographic, and labor force trends.

Director of Operations for Economic Development, Chicago Central Area Committee and Alliance for Regional Development

Who: The Alliance for Regional Development and Chicago Central Area Committee (CCAC) are Chicago-based economic development organizations that collaborate on coordinated programs and led by a management team of employees and skilled consultants.

What: This position is a dual role with the Chicago Central Area Committee (CCAC) and the Alliance for Regional Development. At CACC, the Director of Operations will support the President & CEO with guiding cross-jurisdictional collaborative activities of more than 100 high-level governmental, commercial, and institutional leaders committed to improving the Milwaukee, Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana corridor’s mega-region economy in the areas of Workforce, Transportation and Water. This effort is part of a regional planning pilot project funded by the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration and regional sponsors, in response to the recommendations of an OECD Territorial Review of the Chicago metropolitan area.

What: The Senior Planner will be responsible for supporting the Community Development Department's responsibility for the preparation and maintenance of the regional development guide (Thrive MSP 2040), and Regional Systems and Policy Plans, which includes review of local comprehensive plan amendments, environmental reviews, watershed district plans, housing reviews, and other planning types of reviews. Will serve as a sector representative providing planning technical assistance to Council members and local governments. Transportation Planner - Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission

Who: The Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission has an immediate opening for a entry level engineer or planner with an interest in transportation planning. The Commission conducts area-wide system level highway, transit, and bicycle facilities planning for a seven county Region, and facility and corridor-level traffic engineering and transportation planning for local governments. Current work efforts include transit development plans for public transit operators in the Region; the regional transportation plan and improvement program development; public transit/human services coordination plans; refinement of travel demand models and development of advanced and experimental travel demand models; and traffic engineering studies.

What: The Transportation Engineer/Planner will assist in the conduct of planning studies, which involve: data collection and analysis; applying specialized transportation planning and engineering software; report writing; and, graphics preparation.
