Planner I & Planning Director – City of Sitka, Alaska

Who: City of Sitka, Alaska – Planning Department

What:
Planner I: Assists Planning Director with overall planning, economic development, zoning, community development, land management and related functions. Maintains all planning case files, compile data and related reports and perform special projects as assigned. Performs short- and long-range planning, economic research and development, land development and management, zoning review, and, community development and state and federal grant functions in accordance with assigned responsibilities.

Planning Director: Plans, organizes and directs the overall planning, economic development, zoning, community development, land management and related functions within the City and Borough. Supervise and perform short- and long-range planning, economic research and development, land development and management, zoning review, community development and state and federal grant functions in accordance with assigned responsibilities. Direct supervision of Planner I. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Department and City employees, State and Federal officials and the public. Principal duties performed in both a general office environment and at various fieldwork sites.

Qualifications:

Public Lands Transportation Fellowship - Western Transportation Institute (MSU-Bozeman)

Who: The Western Transportation Institute at Montana State University Bozeman. The Public Lands Transportation Fellows (PLTF) program, previously known as the scholars program, provides fellowships to outstanding masters and doctoral graduates in a transportation-related field. The fellows are provided with a unique opportunity for career development and public service working directly with staff of Federal Land Management Agencies (FLMAs) on key visitor transportation issues.

What: Fellows are assigned to work with staff at a unit or region/field office facing a transportation issue to facilitate a transportation planning or implementation project. The assigned projects help the land units develop transportation solutions that preserve valuable resources and enhance the visitor experience. It's a great match for anyone interested in public lands; working in transportation at the Federal level; or entering the transportation community of one of the cities below.  The program has four goals, which are to:

Job Summary

The Office of the General Superintendent seeks a motivated candidate with strong multitasking skills, great attention to detail and strong interpersonal and written communication skills. The Graduate Fellow will be asked to assist with performing research and producing written reports and analysis. The Graduate Fellow may be tasked with special projects, assisting in Next Century Conservation Plan initiatives, and providing general administrative support. Other duties may be required. Graduate Fellows should be available to work between 20-40 hours a week during the school year. This is a seasonal position. This position will report to the Assistant to the General Superintendent for Real Estate & Administration.  This is a seasonal position.

Typical Duties

Research and report land management best practices; 

Research and report economic, social, and health benefits of open space and forests; 

Assist in land acquisition related projects; 

Participate in government relations and public engagement related projects; 

Assist in Next Century Conservation Plan related activities;

Provide assistance to the District policy committee; and,


Serve as administrative support to the Office of the General Superintendent. 
  
Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university.

Must be a current graduate student in good academic standing, enrolled in an accredited college or university in a graduate degree program or an accredited law school. You are required to upload a transcript with your online application.

Must be available to work a minimum of 25 hours a week.

Must provide two writing samples at the time of interview.

Must possess a current valid driver’s license.

Must be a Cook County resident.

Preferred Qualifications

Current law students or students enrolled in a master’s degree program in Public Policy, Public Administration, Political Science, Urban Planning, and/or a Real Estate or substantially similar area from an accredited college or university.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

Ability to work independently, to be resourceful, and to make sound judgments based on available information.
Highly organized and attentive to detail.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills. 
Ability to communicate and work well with others.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of District information.
Ability to multi-task effectively and productively.
Ability to initiate and follow through with projects under a tight deadline structure.
Ability to work a variable schedule and work effectively in a diverse, fast-paced environment with a focus on delivering the highest level of customer satisfaction.
Ability to drive to various District locations throughout Cook County on a regular basis.
Candidates should be enthusiastic to learn about government and have demonstrated a substantial commitment to excellence as evidenced by one or more of the following: academic honors, leadership ability, extracurricular activities, and/or involvement in community or public service.
