Who: The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) is seeking to hire full-time employees at the Assistant level in the Local Planning Department, with an emphasis on long range planning, research and analysis, economic development and market analysis, or municipal/county government.
What: CMAP seeks Assistants to be part of a large department and provide technical and professional support of CMAP’s long-range comprehensive regional planning, the Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program, and research, data analysis, and mapping work to contribute to the agency’s long-range and local planning efforts. Planning projects may include comprehensive plans, corridor or subarea plans, zoning revisions, studies of special topics such as housing or economic development, and similar planning activities. Research and Analysis projects may include GIS mapping, data processing, quantitative spatial analyses, and the development and documentation of new business intelligence tools and products, and methodologies for quantitative analysis.
Assistants are primarily expected to perform technical work researching, analyzing and writing technical planning documents and supporting public planning projects and initiatives, and related work. Assistants may also be asked to contribute to other CMAP activities, including but not limited to the implementation of ON TO 2050, as well as the agency’s general activities in policy, programming, and planning. Work is typically performed under the close supervision of a Planning Principal. The Borough of State College, Pennsylvania, is accepting applications for individuals interested in joining an innovative and entrepreneurial team as a Planner with the Borough’s planning and community development department. State College is located in beautiful central Pennsylvania with a population over 45,000 and includes the core campus for Penn State University. The position will support the Borough’s planning and community development efforts. Key responsibilities include the development and preparation of plans and reports and coordinating activities which will lead to the implementation of these plans, with a focus on areas of redevelopment and housing. The Planning Department is currently leading several exciting redevelopment initiatives and will soon be embarking on an update to the Borough’s zoning ordinance. This position is an excellent opportunity to work on projects that will have a lasting impact in a remarkable university community.
The Planner position reports to the Planning Director. The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and issues involving local government planning efforts with some knowledge of land development and zoning regulations; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with good communications skills both orally and in writing; and be able to provide effective presentations to a wide variety of audiences. A master’s degree in planning, urban studies, public administration or a related field and at least one year of related experience in local government planning is preferred. Must possess or obtain AICP designation within two years of employment. Any combination of education and experience which provides the required skills and abilities may be considered for the position. Preferred knowledge of and ability to use ArcGIS 10.0 or higher, Microsoft Office applications, and familiarity with demographic data (e.g. US Census). Knowledge of federal community development programs is also preferred. The salary range for this position is $52,367 to $64,407 plus a generous benefit package. We are looking to fill one position at either the Assistant Planner or Associate Planner level. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting research and analysis, preparing maps, graphics, and reports; and facilitating public meetings for a variety of planning projects.
- Depending on level of experience: managing small- to medium-scale planning projects, delegating and supervising work of other planners, developing client relationships, and preparing marketing materials.
The successful candidate will possess the following:

- Familiarity with governmental organizations and procedures, California planning law, planning and environmental theory and practice.
- Proficiency in Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher). Knowledge of Google SketchUp, Adobe InDesign, and other design tools are strongly desired.
- Experience with GIS analysis, including: developing and maintaining GIS databases; preparing and post processing digital maps and graphics; and developing, modeling, and interpreting GIS data. Applicants will be tested as part of the interview process to confirm GIS capabilities.*
