The Austin Transportation Department’s Active Transportation Division within the City of Austin has a Graduate Engineer A or B opening for a full time active transportation designer (bikeways and walkways). This position will assist in the implementation of the Imagine Austin Comprehensive Plan through the development of a comfortable and connected pedestrian and bicycle network.
The Division focuses on the planning, design and implementation of pedestrian and bicycle facilities as well as education and encouragement programs that promote walking and bicycling. This position will work with a small team of designers that focus on bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure design and implementation within the City of Austin.
Graduate Engineer A or B will perform the following specific duties for a diverse array of projects: 
  • feasibility studies 
  • data collection and field work 
  • design 
  • peer review; plan review 
  • managing public processes 
  • project implementation oversight 
  • review layout quality in the field 
  • provide supervision to interns and technicians

As an architect or engineer, you will be responsible for assisting in the overall architectural/engineering (A/E) project management of various leasing, design and construction projects assigned, including, but not limited to, planning, acquisition, design, and construction of new buildings and complexes, as well as the renovation of existing ones.

These positions are located in the Project Management Branches of the Chicago Service Center Operations Division, Southern Service Center Operations Division and the Northern Service Center Operations Division. These offices are responsible for developing, directing, acquiring and delivering services related to the operations, maintenance, and repair of Federal buildings and leased space.

The selected candidate will learn the duties and responsibilities pertaining to project planning, design, construction and repair of buildings. Responsibilities will include assisting a higher level architect, engineer, or project manager in the following duties with the opportunity for increased autonomy upon demonstrated proficiency:
  1. Developing, managing, or monitoring design, new construction or alterations projects and related services in Federal and Federally leased buildings.
  2. As part of quality assurance or quality control, reviewing design and related documents of private sector architects and consulting engineers.

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) seeks a transportation engineer or planner with interest and experience in the fields of travel forecasting, transportation operational analysis, corridor planning, public transit planning, and bicycle and pedestrian planning. This position will provide thoughtful analytical support for planning and forecasting projects undertaken by project teams across the Transportation Section (chiefly the Modeling & Analysis, Transit/Bike/Ped, and Corridor Planning groups).
The employee will develop, maintain, and apply travel demand and microsimulation models to address the impacts of transportation investment and policy proposals on land use, highway traffic, transit ridership, and air quality. Assignments may also include conducting and analyzing highway, transit, bicycle, and pedestrian travel surveys; preparing travel model input data such as land use data, transportation network characteristics, and demographic and employment data; estimating future transportation system demand for long range plans and design of individual highway and transit facilities; and calculating operational statistics such as travel time, delay, and level-of-service.
The successful candidate will be enthusiastic about all manner of transportation analysis, adaptable enough to support a wide range of project types, and able to both conduct deep analysis, including microsimulation, and clearly tell the story of their findings in writing, graphics, and maps. He/she will also have a project portfolio that demonstrates the ability to bring together complex tasks into a cohesive project deliverable. Work is performed under the close technical direction of senior transportation engineers and planners.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the development, estimation, calibration, validation, application, and documentation of travel forecasting, and highway and transit microsimulation models and methods.
  • Assist in designing, conducting, processing, and analyzing various types of travel surveys used in transportation planning.
  • Prepare input data for macro and microscopic simulation models including coding of transportation networks. Tabulate travel simulation model outputs using GIS, database, spreadsheet, and other tools. Compare model results with current and historical data.
  • Develop and apply customized transportation planning and travel forecasting models using Python, C#, or other programming languages.
  • Assist in the conduct of individual highway, public transit, and/or bike/ped studies, including detailed specification of the problem, application of computer models, analysis and review, and reporting of results, and the development of recommendations for project implementation.
  • Collect transportation systems data, including speeds; auto, truck, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic volumes and travel times; and transit ridership. This may include field work.
  • Prepare traffic flow and travel desire diagrams and maps; including traffic volume counts, estimates, and forecasts.
  • Calculate travel time, delay, level-of-service, volume/capacity ratio, and other operational measures of effectiveness for highway, transit, and non-motorized modes.
  • Assist in the preparation of findings and recommendations of various studies, including text, tables, maps, charts, photos and other appropriate graphics, and presents results to  technical committees and the public.
  • Perform related technical work, as required. 
Qualifications
  • Solid analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of transportation planning and transportation engineering, and ability to relate this knowledge to the development and analysis of a regional transportation system and its components.
  • Knowledge of applicable computer applications, graphics programs, database design, programming, word processing, statistical analysis, and spreadsheet software.
  • Experience with travel modeling software, such as VISUM, Daysim, Dynus-T, TransCAD, CUBE, or EMME. 
  • Experience with traffic operations software such as VISSIM, Synchro, or Highway Capacity Software.
  • Knowledge of Python, C#, or other object-oriented programming language and some knowledge of Microsoft Office macros and SQL.
  • Familiarity with field surveys, data analysis, and system evaluation.
  • Experience with geographic information systems (GIS) and their applications.
