Position
Reporting to the Director of Planning, Zoning and Sustainability within the Department of Economic and Housing Development (EHD), the Sustainability Program manager will be responsible for supporting the Department Director and Planning Director in various sustainability initiatives. The program Manager is primarily responsible for developing, implementing, evaluating and updating Newark’s sustainability plan and program. The Program Manager is also involved in grant writing opportunities, grant management and report generation, departmental communications, community outreach, and the intern program.
Specific responsibilities include:
  • Develops, implements, and regularly updates the City of Newark’s sustainability action plan.
  • Develops a sustainability program from the plan that includes grant opportunities, outreach to residents and local governments, and city facility management.
  • Regularly reports and evaluates sustainable efforts to the Planning Director and Director of Economic and Housing Development and makes recommendations concerning the program’s implementation.
  • Assists in the development of annual sustainability objectives and develops a work plan to implement the objectives.
  • Prepares and submits an annual budget request to implement the annual work plan and tracks expenses throughout the year to ensure projects remain within budget.
  • Reviews applications to the city’s Environmental Commission for conformance to the city’s sustainability objectives and environmental regulations, as well as State and Federal environmental standards and regulations.
  • Represents EHD at monthly Environmental Commission meetings and testifies on issues of concern to the City Administration.
  • Briefs the EHD Director and Planning Director on decisions by the Environmental Commission and issues that will be reviewed by the Commission.
  • Assists local community organizations and individuals in applying for Federal, State or foundation support to fund local sustainable programs.
  • Assists inter-departmental coordination of development, implementation and management of sustainable programs.
  • Makes informational and educational presentations about sustainable issues to community organizations.
  • Keeps up to date and involved in regional and national sustainability efforts.
  • Assists with Newark's involvement in the Sustainable Jersey program.
  • Assists with data collection for the Newark Environmental Resources Inventory.
  • Serves as the project manager for EHD's grant writing opportunities.
  • Organizes, edits and disseminates all departmental communications regarding sustainability, including press releases and newsletters.
  • Oversees the department's intern program and supervises interns.
  • Prepares annual and periodic reports on the City's sustainability activities.
  • Assists the Office of Boards staff in reviewing requests for site plan approval involving environmentally sensitive projects and facilities.
  • Continues professional development and maintains certifications.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonable within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Qualifications
The candidate should have the following experience and attributes:
  • Bachelor Degree in related field
  • Minimum of 5 years of related experience
  • Proven public policy, writing and communication skills.
