Outreach and Development Manager


Alliance for Coney Island, Inc. is a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing the transformation of Coney Island into a year-round, world-class recreational oceanfront destination while improving the quality of life of the entire Coney Island community. ​

Primary Purpose:
The Outreach and Development Manager will work closely with the Alliance for Coney Island and all partner organizations. He or she will be responsible for distributing on-the-ground information, maintaining up-to-date data on community needs and matching that to available resources. The Outreach and Development Manager will also work to administer meetings, projects, and outreach activities on behalf of the organization while collaborating on the long-term strategic vision for the organization and developing relationships with small businesses and property owners located throughout the Coney Island community. To develop and implement this vision the individual will be expected to produce grant applications and identify prospective funding sources. Additionally, this individual should be able to advocate on behalf of the organization for initiatives that support the strategic goals of the Alliance.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Strategic Planning:
a) Take an active community outreach role and be the central contact for local businesses and nonprofit organizations, developing relationships on behalf of the organization
b) Assist Executive Director in developing and implementing ACI's long-term strategic plan to further strengthen and develop the organization
c) Knowledge and familiarity with City government and ability to advocate on behalf of the organization and interests of local community
d) Coordinating and planning meetings with stakeholders
e) Liaising and managing projects and initiatives with consultants
Grant Writing/Organizational Development:
a) Research and gather information that will easily allow him/her to grasp the concept of a project or program for which funding is sought
b) Research grant-making organizations and analyze them to identify likely funding sources for specific projects and programs
c) Compile, write, and edit grant applications
d) Keep in contact with grant-making organizations during their review of a submitted grant application in order to be able to supply additional supportive material
e) Manage the process of compliance by supplying progress reports, documentation, and other updates when required by a grant-making organization that has funded a project or program
Community Outreach & Recovery:
a) Coordinate and manage monthly service coordination meeting for local service providers
b) Coordinate with local community based organizations and businesses to collect and assess unmet needs while identifying available resources for these needs
c) Create PR materials, including newsletters and flyers.
d) Initiate collaborations with other organizations and services to assist with translation, design and other items that might be necessary for the creation and success of the community newsletter
The candidate must be able to keep his or her finger on the pulse of the Coney Island community, documenting ongoing needs and challenges. He or she must be able to gather wide-ranging information from front-line organizations and translate it into user-friendly formats for different audiences. He or she should feel comfortable interacting with both local-level community organizations, staff from larger relief agencies and government officials. He or she must keep the lines of communication open, be available for evening meetings, weekend events, and remain in touch after business hours.
Qualifications:
  • Excellent communication skills. Basic experience with outreach and/or quantitative data a plus
  • Familiarity with New York City and government agencies and policies
  • Familiarity with Hurricane Sandy relief efforts a plus
  • Sensitivity to organizations and people of diverse backgrounds and religions as well as to disaster victims and people in need
  • Experience with community organizing and building strategic partnerships
  • Experience with grant writing and excellent writing skills
  • Self-starter with strong self-management skills; ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks and work to meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite and database software
  • Ability to work on weekends
Education and/or Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Urban Planning, Communications, Business Development, Public Policy, Urban Studies, Economics or a related field preferred
  • At least three years of work experience, preferably in community organizing, local politics, social services, economic development or a related field
Language Skills: Fluency in English. Language skills in Chinese, Russian, and/or Spanish a plus.
Work Environment:
  • Must be able to work in a very fast-paced environment and be comfortable working/coordinating while mobile.
  • Must be able to travel quickly around the city, especially throughout Brooklyn neighborhoods.
