Youth Advisory Council, Program Manager - Comic Relief - New York

About the job

Comic Relief US’s (CRUS) Youth Advisory Council (YAC) is composed of trail-blazing young leaders from communities most impacted by poverty, from across the US and globally. The YAC is engaged in our annual grantmaking process and the holistic program consists of workshops, public speaking opportunities at virtual events, a mentorship program, and the launch of a new fund. The inaugural YAC Juntanza “grantmaking” Fund launched in 2021 and ignites intergenerational social change by centering the voice and vision of marginalized youth globally. The Juntanza Fund supports youth-led programs focused on the critical challenges that emerged for young people during the COVID-19 pandemic including hunger, access to quality education and mental health services. This participatory grantmaking strategy further enhances CRUS’s commitment to new, innovative approaches to achieve the organization’s mission of a just world free from poverty.

 

The YAC Program Manager is the YAC program lead and will oversee the development and implementation of YAC 2.0 with support from the YAC Consultant and CRUS Grants team. This role is essential to ensuring the YAC’s successful transition from a pilot program into a sustainable, permanent program within CRUS. The YAC Program Manager will lead on the recruitment of new YAC 2.0 council members, the development and implementation of the annual program including the Juntanza Fund grants portfolio, and facilitate up to 2 monthly meetings and workshops with the YAC. This role will support CRUS’ thought leadership goals and will work in partnership with YAC members and CRUS teams to develop new creative content and communications opportunities. This position will report to the VP, Grant Programs.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

YAC Program Management (65%)

  • Develop, execute, and facilitate the 4 pillars of the YAC program (Workshops and Curriculum, Mentorship program, Juntanza Fund, Thought leadership and Communications) with the VP, Grant Programs and Consultant:
  • Design program model for Cohort 2: program timeline, refined curriculum, candidate guidelines, application process and tools
  • Review the draft evaluation plan and survey for Cohort 2 (baseline, interim, final)
  • Lead the selection process for Cohort 2
  • Curate and lead workshops with co-facilitators or guest speakers
  • Ensure that the YAC is anchored in trusting relationships and has ample opportunities for YAC members to grow and exercise their leadership
  • Recruit a new cohort each year and continue to engage YAC alumni
  • Manage the YAC annual program budget

 

Juntanza Fund Grants Management & Grantee Relationships (20%)

  • Oversee the participatory grantmaking of the Juntanza Fund to ensure a timely and seamless process with the leadership of the council members. In partnership with the Grants team and Consultant:
  • Refine and define the Juntanza Fund goals and expectations for year 2
  • Refine the proposed application and selection process; coordinate with key CRUS staff on the legal/financial process
  • Review and recommend reporting process for final grantees
  • Identify/invite youth-led organizations to apply for grants
  • Conduct an initial review of grant applications
  • Support Cohort 2 in their review/approval of final Juntanza Fund grantees
  • Provide input on executive summaries for top 8-10 grant candidates to be recommended to the Grants Committee/Board
  • Support Cohort 2 in the design and delivery of their presentation and recommendations to the Grants Committee/Board
  • Manage the YAC email account and respond to inquiries from Juntanza Fund grantees
  • Review, with voluntary support from YAC members, interim and final Juntanza Fund year 2 grant reports
  • Support internal learning opportunities about participatory grantmaking, impact and relevant issues
  • Collect and maintain data in Foundant; run reports on impact data as required
  • Conduct research and assess concept notes/proposals for potential Juntanza Fund Grantee Partners, as needed

 

Thought Leadership, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement (10%)

  • Collaborate across CRUS teams to connect YAC members to external speaking & professional development opportunities
  • Collaborate across CRUS teams to integrate the YAC program and members into the rest of the organization
  • Serve as a consultative partner to other departments looking to leverage YAC work, youth-led / participatory frameworks, including providing feedback on CRUS content
  • Research and write issue briefs/talking points for senior leaders that pertain to the work of the YAC
  • Play key roles in coordination, content and design of YAC thought / field leadership gatherings in the participatory grantmaking field and with other youth councils / leaders

Grants Team (5%)

  • Maintain the Grants team and CRUS apprised of key YAC updates and activities
  • Supervise and project manage any interns or junior consultants who may be hired to support the YAC

These responsibilities, as outlined, are not meant to imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the Program Manager. S/he is expected to perform other duties as requested by his or her supervisor.

 

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS

  • A minimum of 5 years of proven experience with participatory grantmaking and/or developing and managing successful programs in the nonprofit or philanthropic sector that advance equity and justice initiatives for children and young people
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting Black, Brown, Indigenous, Asian Pacific Island, queer, disabled, and undocumented youth leaders in advancing equity and justice initiatives for children and young people
  • Demonstrated commitment through lived and/or work experience, educational background, and volunteer experience to poverty alleviation and social justice
  • Experience working virtually with youth ages 15-25 of diverse backgrounds; strong personal commitment to equity and inclusion
  • Strong participatory leadership, management and organizational development skills
  • Strong analytical, written, and oral communication/presentation skills with great attention to detail
  • Digital platform management proficiency
  • Collaborative working style with commitment to the highest standards of ethics and confidentiality
  • Knowledge and understanding of Safeguarding and digital security best practices, particularly as it relates to children, young people, and vulnerable adults.
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field is required
  • Fluency in a second language is ideal

Position Description: The NYU Furman Center is seeking a full-time Data Analyst. The Data Analyst will work closely with our dynamic interdisciplinary team of lawyers, economists, and urban planners to execute quantitative analyses that address important and timely urban policy issues.

The Data Analyst will coordinate data gathering and analysis processes using basic statistical methods and statistical analysis software. Working with multidisciplinary project teams and under the supervision of senior data staff, s/he will also analyze, visualize, and present data for Furman Center publications and online tools. The Data Analyst will contribute to the maintenance of the Furman Center's data repository. The Data Analyst will be exposed to a diverse range of urban and housing policy issues, and will develop a working expertise in a similarly wide range of indicators, data sources, and tools.

Responsibilities:
  • Data management and programming. Manage and develop the Furman Center's data repository by maintaining data subscriptions and updates; writing scripts, primarily in SAS, to process data and calculate indicators using basic statistical and analytic techniques; updating and maintaining technical documentation; and enforcing data integrity and security standards.
  • Report management and writing. Prepare tables, graphs, maps, other visualizations, and methodologies for Furman Center reports. Assist with the management of report production, including timeline, deliverables, quality control, and staffing.
  • Data requests. Fulfill ad hoc data, training, and technical assistance requests from a wide range of external audiences, including academics and organizations from the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
  • General technical support and administration. Support the technical needs of the Furman Center, including serving as liaison to the NYU School of Law IT Services, and performing basic hardware and software maintenance. Along with senior data staff, supervise and support research assistants in analysis tasks and their professional development.

Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree in statistics, economics, public policy, urban planning, the social sciences, computer science, or a related field, plus strong quantitative data analysis skills. Candidate must demonstrate solid mathematical ability, analytic thinking, knowledge of social science research methods, and effective oral and written communication of quantitative findings and methods. Experience writing programs or scripts in at least one statistical or mathematical package (e.g., SAS, Stata, R, MATLAB, SciPy/NumPy, Pandas) or computer programming language (e.g., Python, C++, Ruby) is required; expertise in SAS is preferred.

Must have excellent attention to detail; ability to multitask and respond to shifting priorities; comfort working both independently and collaboratively; and strong organizational, analytical, and project management skills. We are looking for a team player with a good sense of humor, a love of numbers, and a curiosity about the world.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior quantitative research experience—including internships, research assistantships, or faculty-supervised independent research, such as a thesis—is strongly preferred. The strongest candidates will demonstrate mastery of long-term project management, particularly for research projects with quantitative and qualitative components, and should have guided direct reports and peers in data analysis tasks. Additional technical experience in relational databases (SQL) and geospatial data management and analysis (Esri ArcGIS) is a plus. The ideal candidate should have an avid interest in understanding cities, public policy, and housing, and sharing what they learn with others.

Responsibilities

In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to manage a team of GIS analysts and to provide guidance to planning staff members who do basic spatial analysis. The GIS Manager will:
  • Manage GIS staff, including GIS leads in each of the offices
  • Maintain quality control through supervision of GIS leads and in collaboration with the Assistant GIS Manager (West Coast lead)
  • Manage the workflow on the East Coast
  • Manage GIS procedures and software access across the firm
  • Develop in-house GIS tools and resources and supervise all GIS users
  • Provide training to GIS staff and develop training materials
  • Provide technical support and troubleshooting to GIS users in all offices
  • Oversee GIS file management and archiving for the firm
  • Act as point person for internal mapping needs (marketing, website, special projects)
The GIS Manager will also spend approximately one-third of his or her time completing spatial analyses related to demographics, transit routes and facilities, parking studies, and ped/bike projects. The manager may be expected to:
  • Generate maps and cartographic products for projects using ArcGIS, Adobe Illustrator, Google Earth Pro, and other software tools as necessary
  • Perform spatial and network analysis tasks and act as a technical specialist on projects
  • Assist in online GIS/web maps for public engagement

Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should hold at minimum a bachelor’s degree in Geography or Urban Planning or a Graduate Certification in GIS. The candidate must have a minimum of 7 years of experience as a GIS analyst and at least 2 years of experience as a manager or supervisor of a team. The candidate must have strong proficiency with ArcGIS 10.2 or above, Google Earth and Adobe Illustrator. Familiarity with SketchUp, VectorWorks or CAD, Adobe Photoshop/InDesign, Python scripts, C#/VB.NET programming or web development is a plus. Candidates will be tested on their proficiency with GIS tasks.

Job Description

The Division of Preservation Finance seeks a Project Manager for the Green
Housing Preservation Program. The Division of Preservation Finance
administers multiple loan programs including the Multifamily Housing
Rehabilitation Program, the Participation Loan Program program, the HUD
Multifamily Loan Program and the LIHTC Portfolio Preservation (Year 15)
Program. These programs facilitate the affordability, as well as financial
and physical viability of privately-owned multifamily buildings throughout
New York City. This position reports to the Executive Director for Green
Preservation Initiatives within HPD s Division of Preservation Finance.
The Green Housing Preservation Program is a new financing program created
in response to the Mayoral initiative to create an energy and water
utility cost-reduction program to maintain affordability in the small to
mid-sized multifamily building stock, as described in Housing New York,
One City: Built to Last, and OneNYC: The Plan for a Strong and Just City.
The Green Housing Preservation Program provides small-to mid-sized
residential buidings owners with low- or no-interest loans to finance
energy and water improvement projects, as well as low-interest loans for
additional capital needs to ensure physical and financial health for
affordability. Green Physical Needs Assessments conducted by pre-qualified
firms will identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and water
consumption, as well as many other immediate capital needs. The program
provides subordinate financing in conjunction with lending partners or
first mortgage financing as sole lender and leverages incentive sources to
the maximum extenent possible. The Project Manager will be responsible for
managing the intake, assessment, and underwriting of projects receiving
Green Housing Preservation Program loans, including project management
through construction loan closings. He or she will also assist with
monitoring construction progress through completion and may support the
development of green initatives. Primary responsibilities will include but
will not be limited to: Managing program outreach to and communicating
directly with potential borrowers about program requirements, including
facilitating of application submission and coorindation with outreach
initiatives led by the Mayor's Office of Sustainability; Performing
substantive reviews of development budgets, pro formas and affordability
analysis and conducting detailed underwriting; Analyzing possible energy
efficiency and other financing sources for specific projects;
Collaborating with HPD divisions, interagency partners and program
stakeholders, including the NYC Housing Development Corporation, the
Mayor's Office of Sustainability, other local, state, or federal agencies,
utilities and others as appropriate; Ensuring timely completion of
transactions by coordinating loan closings with other HPD divisions and
programs as well external development partners and facilitating all
necessary approvals and procedures related to loan closings; Coordinating
with agency construction monitoring staff and technical assistance
providers during assessment, scope development and construction, and if
necessary, determining course of action to resolve project issues and/or
to propose alternate solutions; facilitating project completion and
preparing recommendations for work-outs prior to permanent loan
conversion; Preparing statistical and tracking reports and working on
other special projects as needed; In conjunction with the Green
Preservation program team, refine and implement tools for effective
program management as needed; Conducting process review, budget analysis,
policy analysis, research and other special projects as needed;


Minimum Qualification Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university and two
years of satisfactory full-time experience in city planning; or 2. A
satisfactory combination of education and/or experience that is equivalent
to 1"" above. Graduate education in city planning, urban planning, urban
design, architecture, landscape architecture, transportation engineering,
public administration, economic development or related fields may be
substituted for experience on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits
from an accredited college for one year of experience. However, all
candidates must have a baccalaureate degree. Special Qualification
Requirements Assignment Level III To be eligible for placement in
Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum
requirements, one additional year of professional experience as described
in "2" above. Assignment Level IV To be eligible for placement in

Preferred Skills

Candidates must have strong financial analysis skills including financial
modeling and financial statement analysis; be detailed-oriented, self

motivated, and able to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Candidates must also demonstrate strong verbal and written communication
skills. Preference will be given to candidates with: a strong financial
background (including underwriting experience), strong project management
background, knowledge of housing development/lending, HPD development
programs and energy efficiency incentives specifically, demonstrated
analytical skills, and ability to work effectively with others to obtain
results promptly. Strong facility with Excel and Word required. Candidates
with Masters in Urban Planning, Real Estate Finance, Business
Administration or related fields are strongly preferred.

appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for
