Community Organizer - Englewood Quality of Life Initiative (EQLI)

The Englewood Quality of Life Initiative (EQLI) is a community driven plan to improve the community through resident developed strategies. The Plan has served as a catalyst for residents and stakeholders of Greater Englewood to implement a number of programs, initiatives, and events as a large coalition formed of several issue focused task forces developing on-going implementation tactics. The Englewood Quality of Life Initiative Community Organizer will be responsible for supporting broad-based community outreach and stakeholder engagement, and administrative support for each respective taskforce. The purpose of the role is to engage critical partners in the execution of the plan, support the many Englewood Quality of Life task force’s initiatives, events and meetings as well as mobilizing residents around campaigns and projects of the task forces.

Project Coordinator - Austin Coming Together

Position Description

The Project Coordinator will have four main responsibilities to administratively support the mobilization, implementation, and evaluation of the Austin Forward. Together. (AFT) Quality of Life Plan: a) aligning community members and resources towards completing Action Plans; b) maintaining a designed approach for project management of AFT Strategies, Actions, and Project Plans; c) coordinating and executing communications for AFT Leaders and partner organizations; and d) organizing funding information to be provided to AFT funding bodies.

Community Organizer - Austin Coming Together

Position Description

The Community Organizer will have four main responsibilities: a) ensure widespread community engagement in, and support for, the Austin Forward. Together. (AFT) Quality of Life Plan; b) develop leadership of each Austin Quality-of-Life Plan Task Force and assist these leaders to mobilize their task forces to take action, which includes convening regular one-to-one and group meetings; c) provide technical assistance and support for the creation and execution of Action Plans and Project Plans d) build the ACT network’s collective power to begin organizing for policy change.

Director of Development & Engagement - Leni Manaa-Hoppenworth, 48th Ward Alderwoman

Description

The Director of Development & Engagement is an essential member of the 48th Ward Aldermanic Office. They will be responsible for implementing the alderwoman’s economic development vision by liaising with key stakeholders, managing development and infrastructure projects, and serving as the point person for zoning requests. This team member will be critical to the Participatory Budgeting process and community outreach. They will provide support to colleagues and constituents by assisting in daily office needs and communication. They will receive and investigate complaints, questions, and concerns from constituents and work with ward staff and city departments to seek a resolution. Working as a member of the core ward team, the Director of Economic Development will work closely with other staff members in the office and provide additional administrative support where it’s needed.

Strong ethics, transparency, and an actionable commitment to diversity are requirements of anyone working for Alderwoman-elect Manaa-Hoppenworth.

Salary range is $55,000-$65,000, depending on qualifications. Health insurance and benefits included. This position is expected to work onsite in the aldermanic office full time, and reports directly to the Chief of Staff.

Community & Partnerships Organizer, Union of Concerned Scientists

Who: Union of Concerned Scientists

What: The Clean Transportation Program is looking for an experienced organizer who will help build up a community of experts and activists across the US and work to support and build power with grassroots partners in the pursuit of reduced climate emissions, increased access to mobility for underserved communities, and improved public health. In this role your work will have real, lasting impacts on how transportation policy decisions are made on the national, state, and local levels, and on the development of thoughtful and effective leaders nationwide. The right candidate will be able to foster authentic relationships with frontline communities bearing disproportionate burdens of transportation pollution—primarily Black, LatinX, and Asian American communities—and will identify and shepherd leaders through their advocacy journey on issues of transit, equitable mobility, and truck and bus electrification.

Responsibilities:
  • Promote efforts to strengthen and diversify both the UCS Science Network and the Science and Community Action Network (SciCAN.org), working to recruit, engage, and provide support to members of both networks and ensuring they are truly inclusive, and values aligned.
  • Build relationships that bolster frontline communities in their battles against environmental, economic, and social injustice.
  • Design and oversee the creation and delivery of trainings, tools, and action opportunities for leaders to strengthen their impact as advocates.
  • Plan, implement, track, and evaluate tactics and initiatives that support long term online community and partnership strategies.
  • Compose and review outreach and campaign materials including action alert emails, fact sheets, talking points, social media content, and other written materials as needed, translating technical materials for varied external audiences.
  • Work with UCS communications and media staff to develop creative products and media strategies to bolster organizing efforts.
  • Ensure effective coordination with cross-programmatic relationship building and federal and state campaign activity.
  • Represent UCS and SciCAN at events and conferences, as well as more generally to the public, decisionmakers, allies, and experts.

Qualifications:

Position requires three to five years of relevant experience in relationship building, community organizing, and utilizing online and offline mobilization strategies, and a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training and experience. Also required are: Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with partners, with a preference for experience working with racial/social justice organizations. Demonstrated ability to thoughtfully navigate issues related to diversity, justice, equity, and inclusion and a deep commitment to advancing these values. Demonstrated ability to work both independently and as a member of a multidisciplinary team in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple projects and deadlines.

Strong project management, time management, written, and verbal communication skills.

May spend extended periods at computer. Little or no exertion required. Some travel required.

Community Project Coordinator - Hamline Midway Coalition

Who: Hamline Midway Coalition

What: As part of the District Council system of the City of Saint Paul, the Hamline Midway Coalition fosters citizen participation in government and community decisions that make our neighborhood a great place to live, work, learn, and play. HMC helps to identify and organize around community-based initiatives, develops leadership among residents, and strives to create social capital -- with a particular emphasis on expanding access to and representative voice for marginalized community members. The Hamline Midway Coalition also serves as a communication network in the neighborhood, providing information and resources to stakeholders.

Description of the Role:

The Community Project Coordinator will work across disciplines and with a diverse range of community members to increase Hamline Midway’s vitality through community development efforts and neighborhood activation while participating and leading a wide variety of projects. Additional responsibilities will include communications and administrative management.

Principal Functions:

Central Illinois Grassroots Organizer - Grassroots Collaborative

Who: Grassroots Collaborative

What: ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY: Grassroots Collaborative (501c3) builds power with working families through strategic community-labor organizing, grassroots leadership development, civic engagement, and research. We organize to win progressive policies and systems change that improve the lives of low-to-moderate income people and communities of color. We utilize popular education to build consciousness, and build organization that unites residents, community and labor organizations to create transformative change for a more just society. Our affiliated 501c4, Grassroots Illinois Action, works to build community political power through issue advocacy and electoral strategies. We are based in 2 locations, Chicago and Peoria.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Grassroots Collaborative engages in campaigns to make corporations, big banks, and the rich pay their fair share. Our member organizations are facing the combined impact of public financial crises (state and city budgets) and decades of disinvestment from communities of color. In the summer of 2017 we launched an initiative to begin building labor-community alliances in additional Illinois cities, beyond Chicago, to grow the power of working families and communities of color beyond Chicago and across the state. This was the origin of the Peoria People’s Project (P3), which was launched with founding members Peoria Federation of Teachers, Change Peoria and SEIU Healthcare IL&IN. The Peoria People’s Project seeks to win economic and racial justice for working families in the Peoria area, through issue organizing, voter engagement and effective labor-community coalition building.

Small Business Organizer - Garfield Park Community Council

Who: Garfield Park Community Council. GPCC is a seven-year old community-based organization dedicated to the revitalization of the Garfield Park neighborhood on Chicago’s West Side.

What: The Garfield Park Community Council (GPCC) is seeking a Small Business Organizer. This will be a contractual temporary employment opportunity.

Garfield Park is experiencing a crucial moment for both community and economic development. Recent investments and initiatives will present new opportunities for small business development, job creation, and economic growth in the neighborhood. The key challenge now is to ensure that the benefits created by investments are not just available to residents, but that residents are engaged in the work in meaningful ways that create pathways to local ownership.

East Portland Action Plan Coordinator - City of Portland, OR

Who: City of Portland, Office of Community and Civic Life.
East Portland houses the largest populations of ethnic-streams, immigrants and refugees in the City. Approximately 40% of East Portlanders identify as a person of color of which more than 25% immigrated here. More than 50%* of East Portland's population is rent burdened; meaning the household spends more than 30% of its income on housing. Twenty-eight percent of the population and 40% of the City's children live in East Portland, which represents 20% of the City's landmass. As such the East Portland Action Plan (EPAP) emerged through efforts by the City and the County to address the issues faced by East Portlanders.

This is a one of a kind program within the City of Portland with a unique governance structure that is grounded in a consensus-based decision-making model. Much of the success EPAP has experienced in their advocacy efforts is based on collective decision making to advance the 268 action items. The EPAP group of advocates is charged with providing leadership and guidance to implement the East Portland Action Plan, a guide for improving livability and prevent involuntary displacement in outer East Portland, as adopted by Portland City Council in February of 2009. The guide consists of community identified strategies to increase the allocation of resources in East Portland. The EPAP Coordinator (II) serves as the centralized hub that connects the multiple spokes of Action Plan advocacy.

What: The Program and the Advocates engaged with it value collaboration, inclusion, and flexibility. The Coordinator (II) receives program direction about implementation of the Action Plan from the community-led committees. This position is co-located with the East Portland Community Office (EPCO). EPCO values and respects EPAP governance structure and works collaboratively to advance the EPAP workplan for the implementation of the Action Plan. The EPAP Coordinator (II) is supervised by the EPCO Coordinator.

Community Organizer - PASO West Suburban Action Project

Who: PASO is deeply rooted in the Western Suburbs working from a gender justice perspective on issues impacting the Latinx and other communities of color. PASO’s model is unique as it combines empowerment tools, support, education, leadership development with policy/advocacy and immigration legal services. No other grassroots immigrant rights organization employs a multi-faceted approach by engaging those directly impacted to inform and lead the organization and its work. PASO’s approach to providing direct services, engaging in outreach, education and policy is informed and led by people directly impacted and in close collaboration with partner organizations and key institutional stakeholders.

What: West Suburban Action Project seeks a passionate and energetic community organizer to provide expertise in organizing, leadership development, membership development, and campaigns with a focus in empowering local community members to create systematic change.

Program Coordinator - America Walks (Portland, OR)

Who: America Walks, a nonprofit national organization is leading the way in empowering communities to create safe, accessible, and enjoyable walking conditions for all.

What: America Walks is seeking a dynamic professional to serve as a Program Coordinator for America Walks. The position will work with senior staff to coordinate programs, develop and implement technical assistance efforts, and conduct evaluation and quality assurance strategies for all of America Walks education and training programming.
Primarily, this position will work on the implementation of a newly developed technical assistance program aimed to increase the use of safe systems approaches for pedestrians in mid-sized cities.   • Excellent people skills: ability to quickly build relationships, to listen to and persuade people, and to engage people effectively around a common goal.
  • Strong communication skills, including public speaking and writing.
  • One year of experience in a community organizing or a political/governmental role, or equivalent educational experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Self-motivated individual able to work independently under strategic supervision from the Deputy Director and Campaign Manager.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to fluently speak language(s) other than English.

This job is based at ioby’s Cleveland office, but can be completed in a flexible schedule with many hours worked from home. Community Engagement Coordinator
ONE Neighborhood Builders (formerly Olneyville Housing Corporation) seeks a qualified candidate for its Community Engagement Coordinator vacancy.  This position will promote ONE NB’s comprehensive neighborhood revitalization agenda in Elmwood and Olneyville.  This is accomplished through community-building activities, convening agencies to work collaboratively and share information, organizing residents and building resident leadership. 

The Community Engagement Coordinator is a full-time position and will report to Director of Community Initiatives.
Specifically, the Community Engagement Coordinator will:
  1. Assist in creating partnerships between families, residents, neighborhood-based organizations, faith-based organizations, city/state government, health and human service providers, community development corporations, job training, and educational institutions, housing, local businesses and other community assets.
  2. Share data and provide access to information for the benefit of residents, groups, organizations and institutions.  Compile, assemble and distribute stories about the neighborhoods community building, planning and implementation process.
  3. Organize and coordinate neighborhood meetings specific to community building and quality of life planning.   Attend neighborhood meetings to identify opportunities for collaboration and value add opportunities for ONE NB.
  4. Engage in neighborhood events for outreach and public relations.
5.     Write, publish and mail newsletters and other communications that advance these goals.
6.     Support the resident-led Olneyville Safer Streets Association and Elmwood Crime Watch by attending the monthly meetings, helping the facilitator develop the meeting agenda, and conducting outreach to maximize attendance.
7.     Conduct one-to-one meetings with residents and community stakeholders to build trust, gather information, and encourage their engagement in neighborhood activities and problem-solving.
8.     Work with the Director of Community Initiatives to ensure the desired outcomes of ONE NB’s RI Department of Health and US Department of Justice multi-year contracts are achieved.   Manage and support three Olneyville Block Captains and other elements of those two programs that depend on resident engagement.
9.     Assist in the coordination of the Olneyville Collaborative, a coalition of 30+ members who work together to share information, promote pride in the Olneyville neighborhood, and ensure scarce resources are stretched wisely and services are not unduly duplicated.  Plan and execute the two signature community events sponsored by the Olneyville Collaborative (Fall Fest and Olneyville Shines).
10. Assist with posting news and announcements to ONE NB’s website, Constant Contact, Facebook, and Twitter.
11. Assist in advancing the Olneyville neighborhood campaign; I Am My Neighbor’s Keeper.

§  Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and the organizational skills to coordinate events and processes.
§  Ability to identify outside resources and utilize their support.
§  Ability to prepare and make analyses, reports, and presentations of performance, proposals, and plans for management.
§  Ability to operate standard office equipment and work with Microsoft Office computer programs.
§  Ability  to engage new people in small and large settings
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma; college degree preferred
  • Minimum two years appropriate neighborhood/community building/community organizing experience. 
  • Familiarity and experience working with residents, groups, organizations and institutions in a neighborhood setting. 
  • Strong skills in group facilitation.  Skills and experience in training and education a plus.
  • Thrive in an exceptionally busy, fluid and demanding work environment
  • Bi-lingual (Spanish)/bi-cultural strongly preferred
  • Highly organized and flexible
