Job Description

The Library of the American Planning Association seeks a student intern for an initial 4-month commitment. This internship provides a unique opportunity for an MLIS student or recent graduate to gain experience in a variety of facets of librarianship including cataloging, collection development, taxonomies, research support, reference, and user services in a specialized library setting. The Library serves a research staff engaged in many cutting-edge projects in service of urban and regional planners and the planning profession.

Duties:

The Intern’s duties will include:
• Library collection management and cataloging.
• Answering reference questions on planning topics from members, non-members, and students.
• Creating annotated bibliographies for research projects. 
• Assisting with the revision and management of APA’s internal taxonomy of planning-related terms.
• Other projects as assigned. 

Qualifications:

We are looking for a tech-savvy, creative, hardworking individual eager to delve into the world of special libraries. Enrollment in or recent degree from an MLIS degree program required. Knowledge of Library of Congress Classification, AACR2/RDA cataloguing standards, and ability to learn APA’s own classification system required. Excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to work independently are necessary. Academic background in social sciences, planning, urban studies, or a related field preferred, as well as experience in working with detailed, comprehensive taxonomies. 

Schedule & Salary:

Position available in mid-August. $15 per hour. Approximately 15 hours per week.
