The City of Michigan City, Indiana, located on the edge of the Chicago metro area in Northwest Indiana, is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Planner. The city is currently undergoing a substantial revitalization effort. Implementation projects to further position the city as a great community and waterfront tourist destination are underway.
The Assistant Planner reports to and works with the Planning Director and Executive Director of the Redevelopment Commission to carry out various planning, zoning, development, and redevelopment activities and initiatives. The position serves as zoning administrator for the city, including handling inquiries for and enforcement of zoning related matters for the city. The Assistant Planner serves as the primary staff to the Board of Zoning Appeals, and serves on the Historic Review Board, as necessary.
This full time position works regular office hours 8:00AM-4:30PM in addition to regularly scheduled evening board and commission meetings as well as other meetings as needed. Some of the duties of the position include, but are not limited to, administering the zoning ordinance, conducting site and plan review for all projects, issuance of zoning approval for all building, sign and improvement location permits, drafting and presentation of staff reports for the Board of Zoning Appeals, grant writing and administration, special project development and management, and grant writing and administration as assigned by the Director.
Qualified applicants shall possess a Bachelor's Degree in Planning or a closely related field as well as have a minimum of two years experience in planning, preferably in a municipal setting. Experience with reading and interpreting municipal and zoning codes and ordinances is required. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are a must. Proficiency with all common Microsoft Office products such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet use and research and computer skills is essential.Experience using GIS is preferred.
