Transit Planner – Chicago, Orlando or Kansas City 

Provides specialized expertise and manages tasks in the areas of transit planning, with particular emphasis on demand response transit services.

Qualifications: 

  • FTA Section 5311 program compliance experience
  • Understanding and experience related to American with Disabilities Act (ADA) and transit demand response services
  • Human service transportation and coordination experience
  • Transit agency operations knowledge, primarily rural transit agency understanding
  • Mobility management experience and assisting transit agencies in connecting commuters and transit users in linking transportation trips at the regional level
  • A thorough understanding of transit agency funding sources and FTA funding practices
  • Ability to train staff in Section 5311 compliance and provide grant applicant workshops and related activities
  • Ability to communicate complicated messages in an easy to understand manner both verbally and written
  • Ability to travel (50% of time estimated) throughout the United States for project work and client coordination


  • General Duties & Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Independently performs complex tasks using advanced planning techniques consulting with Project Manager and/or Team Leader
  • May become involved in the management of smaller projects or phases and tasks within large projects, as well as the supervision, coordination and review of the work of less experienced planners and technicians.
  • Coordinates teamwork tasks and reviews progress with all staff and those associated with the project.
  • Has significant client contact.
  • Participates on interdisciplinary teams, providing knowledge in specific planning areas.
  • Organizes, attends, and has significant participation in public meetings, client meetings, and interviews.
  • Offers innovative concepts and ideas in an effort to advance projects and the company’s ability to perform work.
  • Participates in the development of scopes of services and budget and schedule requirements for planning related portions of projects.
  • May play a key role in assisting the Team Leader and Principals in the implementation of the marketing plan and business development goals established for the office.


  • Education/Experience – Bachelor's degree in urban planning or a related field required; 10-15 years of experience is required.

    Language Ability – Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers and employees of the organization.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet, however, when traveling to the client site, noise level can be loud.
