Tulsa is located in the northeastern quadrant of Oklahoma, right in the heart of "Green Country." The rolling green hills and wooded terrain offer a temperate climate. From the Tulsa Ballet and Tulsa Opera, to Broadway plays and musicals at the Performing Arts Center, to the Philbrook and the largest collection of Western American art at the Gilcrease, Tulsa's rich cultural legacy greatly enhances our citizen's quality of life.
The City of Tulsa seeks to fill three professional planning positions in the Planning Division. Positions all report directly to the Director of Planning & Development and are part of a core team of planners, technicians and project managers focused on the development and implementation of adopted long range plans for the City. We are looking for planners to supplement and advance the work of our current team. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
  • Ability to facilitate or support public engagement activities such as neighborhood meetings, charrettes, visioning workshops and other similar meetings
  • Data mining and technical support/analysis (e.g. census, economic and demographic analysis, mapping)
  • Knowledge of graphics programs used most commonly for planning applications (InDesign, Sketchup, ArcGIS, etc.)
  • Ability to develop and present information using tools such as PowerPoint
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of urban design and urban planning best practices
  • Technical support including mapping
  • Ability to delegate and to work in a team environment
  • Positive attitude and desire to contribute to positive growth of the community
  • AICP preferred (especially for Planner II and III positions)
*Historic Preservation Specialist*
An applicant with experience and demonstrated technical skills in the area of historic preservation is desirable for at least one of these positions. The ideal candidate for this role will have a clear working knowledge of administration of historic preservation regulations, reviews for permits or certificates of appropriateness, service as staff support to a preservation commission and managing Section 106 reviews related to use of federal funds. Knowledge of incentive and economic development programs and tools such as Main Street and Historic Tax Credits is preferred.
Salary: Negotiable based on qualifications
The positions may be filled at any of the following levels depending upon the applicant’s qualifications and experience:
Planner I
Bachelor's degree in business or public administration, urban planning, architecture, or one of the social sciences, and one (1) year of experience in a planning capacity and/or in obtaining grants, alliances, partnerships, and sponsorships; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Planner II
Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, urban planning, or one of the social sciences with an emphasis in social, manpower planning, land use planning, urban design, economic development, or a closely related field; and two (2) years of experience in a planning capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Planner III
Bachelor's degree in business administration, public administration, urban planning or one of the social sciences with an emphasis in social, manpower planning, land use planning, urban design, economic development or a closely related field; and four (4) years of experience in a planning capacity or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
