City Planner, City of Geneva - Geneva, IL


The City of Geneva, Illinois, a vibrant historic city of 21,500 located 40 miles west of Chicago, is seeking a City Planner. The primary duties of the City Planner are to: (1) coordinate the review of proposed site plans, subdivisions, zoning amendments, and special use requests; (2) serve as the primary staff liaison to the Plan Commission; (3) prepare amendments to the city’s comprehensive plan and development regulations; (4) conduct research; (5) prepare reports and make presentations on plans and projects to the Plan Commission and City Council; (6) provide advice and guidance on plans and projects to applicants seeking approval of development plans; (7) update the Community Development Department webpage using the city’s content management software; and (8) prepare maps, charts, sketches and plans pertaining to development proposals and long-range planning projects.

Requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in urban planning or a related field and three to four years of progressively responsible related experience, or any combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job. Requires excellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to maintain effective working relationships with residents, property owners, developers, city advisory commissions, City Council, and other city staff. Also requires and understanding of the principles and practices of comprehensive city planning, zoning, and development review processes. Strong project management, time management, and problem solving skills are a must. An ability to use computers and various software applications including Microsoft Office Suite, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, and ESRI ArcGIS is also required.

The hiring range for the position is $62,787 - $76,080 annually.
