Professional Area:
Urban Design
Location:
CharlotteNC
The School of Architecture (SoA) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in Urban Design at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.  The School of Architecture currently offers four degree programs: Bachelor of Arts in Architecture (B.A. in Arch.), Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch.), Master of Architecture (M.Arch. I, II, III) and Master of Urban Design (MUD). The School’s urban design program is housed at UNC Charlotte’s Center City Building designed by KieranTimberlake, located a block from the city’s light rail line.
New tools and techniques are enabling entirely new ways to imagine and design our cities.  The SoA seeks to advance its capacity to prepare our students to effect positive change in the built environment through the tenure-track appointment of an urban designer with experience in contemporary urban design practice and research. Candidates will be expected to offer urban design and urban architecture studios and seminars to students enrolled in the Master of Urban Design (MUD) program and professional degree programs in Architecture (B.Arch., M.Arch.). This includes teaching courses abroad as part of MUD’s integral international summer program and SoA’s expanding initiatives in international education.
This position is intended to extend the breadth and depth of design expertise in urban design by leveraging digital tools and techniques in new and transformative ways.  It is also expected to expand our curriculum through new elective course offerings (e.g. representation, ecological urbanism, urban morphology, urban infrastructure, etc.) and interdisciplinary collaboration across academic and research units in the College and University. The successful candidate must demonstrate his or her ability to be an effective teacher and to conduct design practice, research and/or scholarship in urban design.
The SoA is supported by exceptional facilities and a dynamic metropolitan landscape.  The School is committed to a culturally and intellectually diverse environment, and celebrates diversity that includes, but is not limited to, ability/disability, age, culture, ethnicity, gender, language, race, religion, sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.  We strongly encourage applications from women and members of under-represented groups. Faculty appointment will commence mid-August 2015.
A Master’s degree in Urban Design, Architecture and/or Landscape Architecture and evidence of urban design practice is required.  Published research and/or scholarship, teaching experience and professional licensure or Ph.D. are preferred.  Qualified applicants must complete the online faculty application at https://jobs.uncc.edu.  Application requirements include a cover letter, a letter of interest, including statements of pedagogical and research objectives, a CV, an abridged portfolio, and contact information for three references.  Submission materials may, in addition, be sent directly to:
