The buildingcommunityWORKSHOP is seeking an associate director to lead the [bc] Brownsville TX office carrying out public design work across the Rio Grande Valley. Sitting on the border between of the United States and Mexico, the RGV defines and embodies many of the issues that our county is grappling with on a daily basis including immigration, poverty and health. Despite facing these apparently insurmountable challenges, [bc] is fortunate to have local and regional partners dedicated to making Brownsville and the RGV an equitable, healthy and vibrant place to live. Position Title: Associate Director - RGV
Location: Brownsville, TX
Start Date: Winter 2014
Compensation: Commensurate with Experience
MAIN PURPOSE & FUNCTION: The Associate Director is the local lead for all efforts associated with [bc] work in the RGV including chief design advocate, community engagement, planning, policy, and administrative/operational manager. In a cooperative management structure, the Associate Director RGV will be a member of the [bc] senior leadership team reporting to the Assistant Director/Director of the organization.
SPECIFIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
■ Participate as a member of the [bc] Senior Management Team.
■ Lead and manage a progressive, multi-disciplinary, design office in projects ranging in scale from single family architectural design to large scale planning projects.
■ Manages and directs the work programs of the RGV office.
■ Works directly on the design and implementation of projects.
■ Reviews and approves for distribution or submission all documents and project deliverables.
■ Prepares and presents reports, deliverables and other presentations to clients, political bodies, community groups, business groups, other stakeholders, and the general public, with strategic advice from the Asst Director/Director.
■ Work with the Assistant Director/Director and Philanthropy Director to conceive and negotiate funding and other support from sponsors, partners and clients.
■ Propose [bc] RGV annual budget and work plan.
■ Active participation in shaping [bc]’s annual budget and organizational work plan.
QUALIFICATIONS
■ Completion of a professional degree in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design and/or a related discipline. Graduate degree preferred.
■ 4 to 6 years of progressively responsible architectural, planning and project management.
■ Professional registration in Architecture, Landscape Architecture or Planning preferred (or on path toward completing registration within 1 year).
■ Ability to manage a diverse team of staff; effective leadership skills including the ability to inspire, motivate, and mentor staff.
■ Sound analytical, creative, decision-making and strategic skills.
■ Ability to analyze and understand complex social and cultural issues.
■ Experience in community engagement, public involvement, problem-solving, consensus building, facilitation, negotiation and mediation with diverse groups, individuals, and interest groups.
■ Ability to establish sound and effective working relationships with others.
