Short-Term Consultant on Global Urbanization - OECD (Paris)

Who: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The mission of OECD is to promote policies that will improve the economic and social well-being of people around the world. The OECD provides a forum in which governments can work together to share experiences and seek solutions to common problems. We work with governments to understand what drives economic, social and environmental change. We measure productivity and global flows of trade and investment. We analyse and compare data to predict future trends. We set international standards on a wide range of things, from agriculture and tax to the safety of chemicals.

What: The OECD’s Centre for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities is hiring a short-term consultant to contribute to a research project on global urbanization. The project aims at providing a comprehensive overview of global urbanization since 1975 using a new and innovative dataset of all cities across the world. Working in a team with several economists/policy analysts, the selected candidate will be expected to contribute to the project through:
  • Conducting econometric analyses describing the evolution of cities across the world over time
  • Creating charts, figures and maps visualising the data
  • Drafting documents describing the results, including sections of the final report
  • Preparing presentations, talking points and speeches describing the analyses
  • Organising events related to the project
The selected candidate is expected to start in June. The initial contract duration will be decided in coordination with the selected candidate and will vary between three and six months with the possibility for renewal. The position will be based at the OECD headquarter in Paris.

Qualifications: The successful candidate must have:
  • Experience in conducting quantitative research and writing academic papers
  • Proven ability to draft clearly and concisely
  • Advanced knowledge of modern microeconometric methods and substantial experience applying them in Stata or R
  • Experience in working with spatial/remote sensing data or knowledge of urban economics
  • Completed PhD or PhD studies at an advanced stage in economics, economic geography or a related discipline. Alternatively: Master’s degree and several years of comparable experience working on relevant research projects
The ideal candidate also has:
  • In-depth knowledge of urban economics and related fields
  • Significant experience using GIS to analyse data and produce maps for publications
  • Experience in data visualisation
  • Experience in drafting policy reports or other publications that aim at communicating complex issues to a non-expert audience
How to apply: Interested candidates are invited to send their CVs and a relevant writing sample (e.g. publication, working paper, term paper, policy paper) to abel.schumann@oecd.org, mentioning their availability and preferred contract duration. Candidate selection will take place in early May and successful candidates will be informed in mid-May.
