Description
The Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Florida State University seeks candidates for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions to begin in August 2018, as described below. We especially seek individuals who can contribute to our ongoing efforts to enhance our multicultural educational environment.
Position 1: Assistant Professor, Land Use and Real Estate Development
The successful candidate for this position is required to have a Land Use and Real Estate Development focus, with general teaching and research interests focused upon land development in the United States. The successful candidate is expected to contribute to strengthening the relationship between the Department of Urban and Regional Planning and the Real Estate program in the College of Business. The successful candidate will teach courses in the unit’s core curriculum, land use specialization, and at the intersection of land use planning and real estate development. We encourage applications from candidates who can incorporate topics such as development finance, project permitting, and fiscal impact analysis into our planning curriculum. Understanding of the Florida land development context would be welcome, though similar experience elsewhere would also be useful.
Position 2: Assistant Professor, Land Use Planning
The successful candidate for this position will serve as a primary faculty member in the program’s nationally recognized Land Use and Comprehensive Planning specialization. The successful candidate will teach courses in the unit’s core curriculum and land use specialization, and may include courses that cover related topics such as: comprehensive planning, sustainable infrastructure and development, plan implementation, site planning, or urban redevelopment. We further seek candidates who can teach at the intersection of land use and other dimensions of planning. We encourage candidates whose research contributes to how issues of land use impact individuals differently by race and ethnicity, social and economic mobility, and gender and sexual orientation to apply. We are especially interested in scholars whose work engages with issues of concern to Latina and Latino communities in the United States and/or communities in the Latin America and Caribbean regions.
Administratively housed within the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy, the Department includes 11 faculty and 110 graduate students and offers a PAB-accredited professional master's degree, a Ph.D., and an undergraduate minor. Tenure-track Position in Urban Studies at Trinity College
The Urban Studies Program (URST) at Trinity College announces a tenure-track position at the assistant professor level focused on Sustainable Urban Development, with a comparative global perspective. We particularly encourage applications from candidates with some range of the following preferred qualifications and expertise: sustainable urban development and environmental policy, international comparative urban environmental policy, urban environmental health and policy, sustainable urban design, sustainable urban transportation and infrastructure, global climate change’s impacts in urban development, urban sustainability and environmental justice, or intersections between social and environmental movements and urban sustainability dynamics. Interests in urban Geographic Information Systems (GIS), spatial statistics and data visualization applications to sustainable urban development will be considered, but are not required. The geographical regions of specialization are open, although primary research in regions other than North America is preferred; an international and comparative perspective on sustainable urban development and environmental policy is imperative.
The successful applicant will be expected to teach courses in her/his specialty, including a basic course on sustainable urban development and a core course entitled, “From Hartford to World Cities.” URST is an interdisciplinary program, and thus we welcome applicants from a number of disciplines. DUTIES:
At the full performance level, the Community Planner:
- Monitors and reviews the state and metropolitan transportation planning process to ensure that an efficient transportation program is developed which is consistent with local, state and Federal objectives.Limit the duties listed to the top 5 or so based on the job analysis, not the PD.
- Coordinates grant program, funding and project issues with other US DOT modes and other Federal agencies (e.g., HUD, EPA, DOL, etc.).

- Experience providing technical assistance with program and project management. There is no educational substitute at the GS-12.
- You must have completed a full 4-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in community planning or a related field such as urban affairs, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, sociology, geography, economics, political science, or public administration that included at least 12 semester hours in the planning process, socioeconomic and physical elements of planning, urban and regional economic analysis, and development finance, from an accredited college or university.
- Note: Applicants with degrees in related fields, such as those listed above, who do not have the 12 semester hours of specified course work must have had at least 1 year of work experience in community planning acquired under the supervision and guidance of a community planner. OR
- You must have a combination of education and experience--courses equivalent to a major in one of the above disciplines, or a combination of related courses totaling at least 24 semester hours in any combination of the above disciplines of which at least 12 semester hours were in the planning process, and socioeconomic and physical elements of planning, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
- The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in the appropriate field. In addition to courses in the major and related fields, a typical college degree would have included courses that involved analysis, writing, critical thinking, research, etc. These courses would have provided an applicant with skills and abilities sufficient to perform progressively more responsible work in the occupation. Therefore, creditable experience should have demonstrated similarly appropriate skills or abilities needed to perform the work of the occupation.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Applications and nominations are sought for the position of Director of the University of Toledo’s Intermodal Transportation Institute (ITI). The Intermodal Transportation Institute, established in 2004, is an interdisciplinary Institute developed to promote and coordinate UT’s research, education and community engagement relating to transportation and to serve as a portal for external constituencies to access UT’s transportation-related talent and resources. The ITI has a broad agenda of interdisciplinary activities relating to the full spectrum of transportation-related topics of academic interest and of interest to the local community. These include supply chain management and business logistics, the design and planning of intermodal transportation systems, transportation data resources, transportation infrastructure improvements, alternative energy sources for transportation, and land-use planning and transportation needs projections. In addition to research activities, the Institute organizes events and seminars to advance understanding of transportation research in Northwest Ohio and the Great Lakes Region.
The Institute is overseen by a governing board chaired by the Vice President for Government Relations that includes the deans of the colleges of Business and Innovation, Engineering, Language Literature and Social Sciences, and Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The Institute is also supported by an external Advisory Board composed of local business and government leaders.
Applications and nominations are encouraged for exceptional candidates who may come from either an academic or non-academic background. Depending upon the academic qualifications of the successful candidate, the position may carry academic rank in an appropriate department. The Director will be expected to generate external funding to support the Institute, develop external funding opportunities for other faculty members, coordinate research activities with other universities and governmental agencies, and organize and lead proposal development activities. The successful candidate will be recognized on and off campus as a leader in transportation and should bring the following qualifications:
- A record of high quality transportation-related research publications.
- A record of winning and directing funded transportation related research projects.
- A Ph.D. or terminal degree in a discipline related to transportation or at least five years of senior-level administrative experience in a non-academic transportation related organization such as industry or a federal or state agency.
- Demonstrated experience in working on interdisciplinary transportation- related research projects.
- A record of working with external constituencies, including transportation-related businesses, universities, and other community leaders.
- A thorough knowledge of current issues and trends relating to transportation as well as federal initiatives and funding underway relating to transportation.
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to generate support for the Institute both across the University and from outside the University.

This is a full-time 12 month position that includes summer support and an administrative stipend. The faculty of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning invites applicants for a ladder (tenure track) position as assistant professor in the field of Environmental Planning. Our faculty is part of the School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York. The appointment is expected to commence in August 2016.

By the beginning of the appointment in August 2016, applicants must hold a Ph.D. in planning or a related field. The selected candidate may be given teaching responsibilities in any or all of our department’s degree programs, described below. We are especially interested in candidates who will become closely involved in the “Environmental and Land Use Planning” specialization within the Master of Urban Planning Program.
The duties of a faculty member involve a combination of research, teaching, and service. The teaching load is two classes per semester, at the graduate or undergraduate level in the general curriculum as well as in his or her area of specialization. Up to two course-relief opportunities may be available during the tenure-track period. There is an also expectation of service to the department, school, university, and community.
Our Department: With thirteen tenured or tenure-track faculty members, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning is one of two accredited departments in a professional school of about 700 full-time equivalent students. The Department offers five degree programs: the B.A. in Environmental Design with about 90 students; the accredited Master’s of Urban Planning (M.U.P.) degree with about 90 students; joint master degrees with Architecture, Law, and soon Public Health; and a growing Ph.D. degree in Urban Planning currently with nine students. The department also participates in administering master’s level studies in historic preservation and real estate development.
The department is expected to re-enter its fully restored nineteenth-century building on the university’s historic urban campus, by the summer of 2016. We are served by a fine Architecture and Planning Library, and have excellent computing facilities, with a variety of high-performing systems available in labs and studios.
Interdisciplinary Opportunities: The person hired for this position will be encouraged to become involved with the new and expanding “RENEW” Institute at the University at Buffalo, which conducts research and education related to energy, environment, and water. The Institute is university-wide and interdisciplinary, focusing on complex energy and environmental issues, as well as the social and economic ramifications. The College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs (CAPPA) at The University of Texas at Arlington seeks a Chair at the rank of tenured full professor for the newly-created Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture (PALA). By integrating well-established programs of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning, this new department will enable synergies between the two. In collaboration with the faculty, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to guide the future direction of the department’s programs including a PAB-accredited masters degree Program in City and Regional Planning, an LAAB-accredited masters degree in Landscape Architecture, a large Ph.D. Program in Urban Planning (with a proposed Landscape Architecture emphasis), an undergraduate Minor in Environmental & Sustainability Studies, and various certificate programs. The College and the University offer many opportunities for collaboration and research support, through the Institute of Urban Studies, the Arlington Urban Design Center, and the new Institute for Sustainability and Global Impact.
We are seeking candidates with excellent administrative skills, a strong research record, demonstrated teaching excellence, a commitment to shared governance and interdisciplinarity, and the desire to foster innovative synergies between the fields of planning and landscape architecture at all degree levels. The founding Chair will also lead collaborative initiatives between PALA and other academic units within and outside of the College.
MinimumQualifications
- A PhD in planning, landscape architecture, or related field
- A strong record of scholarship and demonstrated ability to secure funded research
- Academic credentials and a deep understanding of the values, perspectives and practices of both professions preferred
- Professional experience in at least one of the fields preferred
- Professional certification or licensure preferred
CAPPAis UTA's new College of Architecture, Planning and Public Affairs created by the integration of the School of Architecture and the former School of Urban and Public Affairs. The College interweaves the unique gifts and expertise of each person and profession to co-create urban, ecological, and social fabrics that unleash the inherent potential of places and communities in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and beyond. It offers six professional degree programs: Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, City and Regional Planning, Public Administration, and Public Policy. It also offers Ph.D. programs in Urban Planning and Public Policy and Public and Urban Administration and undergraduate minors in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, Urban and Public Affairs, and Architectural History. CAPPA currently houses approximately 1,000 students, 70 faculty members, and 17 staff members. UT Arlington is situated in the heart of Dallas-Fort Worth—the fourth-largest metropolitan area in the U.S.—and an ideal setting for research, practice, and community service in a rapidly developing region rich with arts, culture and numerous large-scale planning and landscape architecture initiatives.
