The Department of Public Administration, School of Public and Global Affairs at Northern Illinois University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track assistant professor beginning fall 2018.  Faculty are expected to have an active research program, teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students, and engage in service activities.  The NASPAA accredited MPA program is ranked #6 in city management, #14 in public finance and budgeting, and #30 in public management administration by US News and World Report
This faculty member must be able to teach in the nonprofit specialization and select core MPA courses. They will also have the opportunity to teach undergraduate students in the Nonprofit and NGO Studies program, in theCenter for Nonprofit and NGO Studies, and doctoral students in the public and nonprofit leadership and development area.  The main NIU campus is located in DeKalb, Illinois, 60 miles west of Chicago. The L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University invites applications for up to five open-rank tenure eligible faculty positions to begin in the Fall 2016 semester. After the successful recruitment of sixteen new faculty colleagues in the past three years the School is seeking to continue its growth by expanding its commitment to sustainability, justice, resiliency and equity in government. Successful candidates will join an interdisciplinary group of colleagues who are linking crime prevention and place-making in diverse urban environments. This focus reflects the core areas in the Wilder School (criminal justice, homeland security and emergency preparedness, public administration, public policy and urban and regional studies and planning) and aims to foster improved community and government relations that promote safe, economically viable and engaged communities.

We seek applicants who will contribute to the strength and diversity of our faculty and whose scholarship is in one of our core areas. For one or more of these positions we are interested in hearing from candidates with interest or experience in data analytics, particularly from an econometric perspective. The faculty member will be required to have an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the School. Candidates seeking a position at the Associate/Professor level must have a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing School expertise.

All candidates should show a commitment to high-quality instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including teaching and mentoring in the school-wide Ph.D. program in Public Policy & Administration. Evidence of scholarly productivity is required and a Ph.D. in a related discipline is expected (ABDs will be considered subject to demonstration of timely progress towards degree completion and the completion of all requirements for the PhD degree before the start of the appointment). Hiring at the Assistant Professor level is most likely although exceptional Associate Professor or Full Professor candidates with nationally recognized scholarship and a history of securing external funding are also welcome to apply.

Assistant Professor (1 position), Assistant or Associate Professor (2 positions), The School of Public Affairs (SPA) - CU Denver, CO

The School of Public Affairs (SPA) at CU Denver plans to hire for 3 tenure/tenure-track positions to start in fall 2016. One hire will be at the Assistant Professor level and will focus on advancing theoretical and/or methodological approaches in the study of policy and politics involving the environment and/or natural hazards (an area where we are ranked #10 by US News and World Report). Two hires may either be at the Assistant or Associate level. One of these will be in the area of nonprofit management (where we are ranked #14 by US News and World Report) and the other will be in the areas of local government and/or public management.

Candidates with expertise in more than one of these areas are particularly appreciated. In addition to demonstrating excellent research and teaching in the above areas, candidates with quantitative skills, including the ability to teach methods courses at the PhD level, are sought.

Tenure-track positions at SPA teach a 2:2 load each academic year. SPA has considerable online enrollments, and we expect faculty to teach both face/face and online. Complementing the existing graduate level degrees, SPA will launch a new online BA in Public Service degree in fall 2016 and we are looking for candidates willing to teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels.

For the Assistant Professor hires, we seek candidates who have completed PhDs, with evidence of excellence in teaching, publishing, and demonstrated efforts at attaining external grant funding.
For the Associate Professor hire, candidates are expected to be a leader in their field, with an excellent record in research, demonstrated through both externally funded awards and publications, as well as excellence in teaching, mentoring, and funding graduate and/or undergraduate students.

SPA is a NASPAA-accredited MPA program ranked nationally at #29 by US News and World Report. With 25 full-time faculty, we also offer a PhD in Public Affairs, a Masters in Criminal Justice, a Bachelors in Criminal Justice, and will soon launch the fully online BA in Public Service. All programs except the PhD are available fully online.

SPA and CU Denver are located in the downtown area of one of the fastest growing cities in America. Our city and state are microcosms for research and teaching in environmental policy, local government, nonprofits, emergency management, public health, and public finance. Our faculty have grown their external funding by 200% over the past 5 years. Faculty currently have grants from NSF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, Ford Foundation, Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Robert Wood Johnson, Foundation, Walton Family Foundation, the Colorado Trust, the Colorado Department of Public Health and the Environment, the US Department of Health and Human Services, and the Annie E. Casey Foundation. SPA faculty routinely attend and present at conferences around the world and are often invited to speak to both academic and practitioner communities on their areas of expertise.


Most faculty are involved with SPA’s Buechner Institute for Governance (BIG), the applied arm of the school, either through research, training, evaluation, or service. BIG is known as an institute leading the way for translational research, with a focus on evidence-based practices, including but not limited to applied research in Colorado. BIG includes Centers focused on local government, collaborative governance, education policy, criminal justice and policy process research. BIG also runs a Certified Public Management program and several other leadership development programs. The Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management (PPPM) at the University of Oregon invites applications for a tenure-track position at the assistant, associate, or full professor rank. Strong candidates with research and teaching interests in any policy or management area will be considered, as long as the candidate is willing and able to teach some of the courses noted below. Candidates must have strong quantitative and/or qualitative research skills. The Metropolitan Area Planning Council seeks candidates for the position of Regional Land Use Planner who will serve the Land Use Department. This individual will work on a variety of projects, including, but not limited to, undertaking local visioning and land use planning, assisting in housing and economic development planning, open space planning and/or writing bylaws or ordinances. The primary goal of this work will be to encourage sustainable patterns of development and preservation consistent with MetroFuture, most frequently by working with municipalities to modernize land use regulations and policies.
The responsibilities of the Planner will include activities such as: assisting municipalities to develop and implement plans and strategies; researching and preparing reports, studies, testimony, and presentations; advising various levels of government on policies and best practices; drafting plans and policies, including zoning bylaws; Candidate should have expertise in one or more of the following: federal, state and local land use policy issues, laws, and regulations; current best planning practices related to master planning; land use, economic development, open space and housing planning; and familiarity with state programs such as Expedited Permitting, Smart Growth Zoning, Compact Neighborhoods, etc.
Successful candidate will possess either a Bachelor’s Degree in urban/regional planning, public policy/management, urban design/architecture or closely related field and at least four years relevant job experience, or a Masters’ Degree in a relevant field with at least two years relevant professional experience. Masters Degree, AICP Certification and additional job experience preferred. Legal authorization (citizenship or visa) to work in the USA is also required.
