What: The primary purpose of the Planner II position in the Current Planning Division is to perform professional city planning functions related to land use applications such as rezonings; conditional use permits; street closures; subdivision variances; site and subdivision plan reviews; planned unit development (PUD) creation, deviation and modifications; special exceptions and variances. The Planner II-Development Review acts as a project manager for the City and provides professional analysis used by the Planning Commission and City Council to make discretionary land use decisions. Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university, supplemented by a master’s degree in urban planning regional planning, civil engineer, or related, and a minimum of three years experience in professional planning work. Experience working with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) programs and procedures, elected officials and neighborhoods preferred. SPECIAL 

REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid appropriate driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS: Typically involves walking/standing in office environment to meet public, show displays, work with other departments and retrieve files. Also involves light lifting and other physical activities including use of computers and motor vehicle operation (approximately once every one or two weeks). Field reviews may involve walking in fairly rugged terrain. Field work requires spatial interpretation, judging heights, distances, slopes and the like. Frequent and regular contacts made at all levels of county staff and the general public, possibly requiring use of alternative approaches to influence outcome. The Fauquier County Department of Community Development is seeking an experienced planner and manager to fill the position of Assistant Chief of Zoning and Development Services. The Zoning and Development Services Division includes 27 staff positions responsible for land development and building construction functions, to include: Zoning, Building, Site Planning, Subdivision, and Stormwater Management. Staff is responsible for administering, interpreting and enforcing the Zoning Ordinance, Subdivision Ordinance, Stormwater Ordinance, Design Standards Manual, Building Code and land use and environmental provisions of the Code of Virginia.

The Assistant Chief will independently manage a number of these land development functions and play a significant role in the ongoing process of streamlining and simplifying the development process. Minimum requirements include a Bachelor’s degree in urban planning or closely related field, with a Master’s degree preferred, with at least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in planning and/or zoning. Experience in both the public and private sectors strongly preferred, with specific experience in land development design and/or review, zoning, subdivision, ordinance and permitting required, as well as experience managing staff and/or functions.

An Overview
An Urban Planner II performs professional planning work involving research, analysis, plan development, and presentation and interpretation of concepts and data pertaining to urban planning and plan implementation.
