The newly re-constituted Chattanooga Design Studio seeks an enthusiastic, detail-oriented urban designer to lead the Studio’s design efforts. The Design Studio is a non-profit community resource that promotes excellence in urban design in Chattanooga through education, facilitation, and collaboration. The Studio will be an active partner in promoting the value of good urban design decisions in the development, functionality, and resiliency of the City of Chattanooga. As a steward of the city’s rich legacy of urban design and planning, the Studio will strive to increase public awareness of urban design issues and their impact upon our quality of life. With a particular emphasis on the importance of the public realm, the Studio will provide high level coordination of urban design efforts to help frame a vision for the future growth of the city that promotes optimal value for the community.
About the Position
The Senior Urban Designer will be responsible for managing and performing a broad array of research, analysis and design investigations. The position will entail directed and independent work in support of the Studio’s mission. The ideal candidate will be equally adept working with non-profit, public, and private sector organizations throughout the community. The Senior Urban Designer operates under the supervision of the Executive Director and will be responsible for the direction, oversight and management of a robust intern program.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate will demonstrate critical thinking in the design of the community at a variety of scales; demonstrate knowledge of principles, practices, and trends in architecture and urban design; conduct studies, analyze findings and provide recommendations for a wide range of urban design issues with an emphasis on the urban public realm; exhibit strong written, oral and graphic communication skills; possess illustrative graphic skills in hand renderings and/or computer aided techniques; be equally adept in working with local governments, housing and downtown development organizations, philanthropic organizations and private developers; and be capable of effectively working in ethnically, and socio-economically diverse environments

Required Education and Experience
The minimum requirements for the position are a bachelor's Degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or planning from an accredited college or university and eight (8) or more years of relevant urban design experience. Licensed architects are strongly encouraged to apply.
