Responsibilities:
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to implement complex design projects and support growing integrated Urban Strategies practice
  • Manage all aspects of project delivery including client management, consultant management, financial management, and project planning and reporting management
  • Business development – promote Urban Strategies practice internally within the corporation and externally to all manner of potential clients
  • Provide creative report writing, assignment writing skills, and hand sketched and computer aided designs for projects
  • Develop CAD/Illustrator/GIS for urban design and landscape architecture packages
  • Provide meeting and table facilitation as part of community workshops
  • Be available and able to travel nationally on a regular basis (usually 2 to 3 day segments)
Required Skills:
  • Experience managing engineering, architecture and landscape architecture teams
  • Understanding and experience with various aspects of project design including planning through final design, project budgets, administration, contracts and project management
  • Ability to conduct business development successfully, generate new leads and create new partnerships with similar organizations
  • Understanding of multiple disciplines ranging from engineering systems, market economics, zoning laws, and complete street and stormwater management design
  • Experience in the design of transportation facilities and of public realm infrastructure projects
  • Ability to work successfully within a corporate matrix environment; responsibilities include reporting to multiple bosses, managing junior design staff, and recruiting qualified design candidates

What you will accomplish:
  • Help support GIS/cartographic capabilities by creating complex final map products supporting natural, cultural, planning and other environmental resource projects, including the following:
  • Generate EIR, archaeology and biology maps using ArcMap 10.3.1. Examples include Location, Vicinity, Land Use, Zoning, Farmlands, Soils, Geology, Floodzone, Habitat, Jurisdictional Features, etc. Full EIR’s may require creating up to 20 different figures using data from the SWCA databank as well as data downloaded from various sources on the internet or provided to SWCA by the client;
  • Calculate and illustrate impacts to jurisdiction and habitats for bio reports, generally by converting CAD site plans for use in ArcMap;
  • Download, process, and export GPS data from Trimble GeoXT Units to Shapefiles using GPS Pathfinder, to use in bio report figures. Upload shapefiles on Trimble GeoXT units using GPS Pathfinder for use by biologists in the field;
  • Create maps and visuals for proposals using ArcMap and Adobe Illustrator, to highlight SWCA project locations and experience, as well as aerial maps for proposal covers;
  • Create elevation illustrations of jurisdictional features using CAD and Adobe Illustrator;
  • Create visual simulations illustrating before and after conditions of a proposed project. A multiple-step process using ArcMap, Google SketchUp, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe InDesign.
  • Overall coordination with staff to ensure work is completed on time and within budget. This involves a good level of communication to properly prioritize work when juggling multiple projects.

Experience and qualifications for success:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Cartography, Archaeology, GIS Technology (GIST), Biology, Environmental Science or related field with an emphasis in GIS (or GIS certificate)
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience beyond university attendance with GPS technology, field data collection techniques, data integration to a GIS, and troubleshooting of equipment and digital files
  • Demonstrated experience with ArcGIS 10.0-10.1 or higher as well as knowledge of cartography and computer mapping including design principles and understanding map creation procedures in ArcGIS required
  • Demonstrated ability of data transfer, data analysis, data mining, and data inventory using basic spreadsheet applications (e.g., Excel, Access, ArcGIS attribute tables)
  • Prior work in natural or cultural resources management, remote sensing, and prior experience working with federal land agencies such as the USFS, NPS, BLM, BOR, USGS desired

The City of Madison Planning Division seeks a creative and innovative Planner who will be responsible for professional urban and community planning work within the Department of Planning & Community & Economic Development.

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in, and provide professional support to planning activities related to implementation of the Comprehensive Plan and special area plans for districts, neighborhoods, corridors, and station areas.

The work involves review of development proposals for consistency with plans, zoning regulations, and special district standards (including urban design and historic preservation districts). The position provides staff support to the Mayor’s City Design Initiative which includes an in-house City Design Studio.  The City Design Studio includes staff from different teams in the Planning Division and it provides urban design and architectural rendering support on various planning projects.  City Design Studio orchestrates an annual Mayor’s Design Awards program, the first of which will occur in 2015.  The position supports senior planning professionals and helps with the day to day administration of the Plan Commission, Urban Design Commission, and Landmarks Commission such as helping to prepare agendas, assemble packets, and distribute packets to Commissioners, as well as helping with neighborhood meetings regarding complex development proposals.

As a member of the Planning team, creativity, innovation, imagination, and going beyond the traditional or expected is encouraged.

This series is structured to provide advancement from a Planner 1 to a Planner 2, as a function of the employee's career development, but generally within 2 years of starting employment as a Planner 1. Progression to a Planner 3 or Planner 4 is dependent upon the incumbent taking on additional duties and responsibilities as well as the needs of the department. About the Position

Skills Required:
Provide experienced project team management and technical oversight, quality control for construction documents. Include design thinking, sketching, backed with technical experience, for team collaboration in and outside of office. Bring a proactive and responsible work ethic to the team. Company representation for Client outreach. Assist the team in pursuing proposals and marketing efforts. Must be timely, self-organized, possess natural interest in supporting group success, balance collaboration with leadership.

Requires leadership, vision, high technical design, artistic & intellectual capabilities, field interpretation and installation experience, in Landscape Architecture, Ecological Planning, Urban Design. Must submit strong portfolio of large and small scale interdisciplinary projects. Pre-concept through design, construction and installation, specifications.

Education Requirements:
Minimum Masters degree. Excellent management and communication, writing skills, fluent in CAD, Adobe Creative Suite, Rhino. Revit and GIS a plus. Strong candidates will possess leadership in rendering, modelling, design and construction documentation.
