DeKalb County Government has an outstanding opportunity for a dynamic and innovative professional to join the County as its Director of Community Development. The successful candidate will have broad public sector experience with a strong background in community and economic development. Additional valued experience includes planning and implementing successful programs to meet the needs of a diverse community, developing comprehensive community development strategies and working collaboratively with non-profit agencies, government entities, businesses and faith-based organizations.
The ideal candidate should have an understanding of the social and economic forces affecting families and communities to shape programming efforts. The County is interested in a candidate who has the ability to think critically and creatively, and exercises excellent judgment to make multidimensional decisions based on facts and experience.
The department’s primary purpose is to develop viable urban communities that principally benefit low to moderate income persons. The Director of Community Development is responsible for overseeing the County’s comprehensive neighborhood revitalization plan. Duties include administering $27.5M in federal entitlement grants that aid in expanding economic opportunities and managing a $3.5M operational budget; providing oversight and achieving departmental process efficiencies to enhance the effectiveness of resource utilization, programs and services provided. The Director of Community Development reports to the COO and DCOO for Development, keeping them informed on matters related to the department’s progress in attaining strategic objectives.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in City or Regional Planning, Civil Engineering, Public Administration, Finance, or a related field (Advanced Degree preferred); ten years of experience in community development, public works construction, or a related field including four years of managerial experience at the executive level with a comparable jurisdiction. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.
