Position Overview:    
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, an internationally-known, multi-disciplinary architectural and engineering design practice seeks an experienced urban designer to join the award-winning City Design Practice in its San Francisco office. The Practice specializes in the urban design and planning of large-scale, urban revitalization projects, as well as the preparation of master plans for major institutions, workplace initiatives, and new communities. The candidate will have the opportunity to lead urban design and planning projects within the western US.    
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Strengthens SOM’s firm vision, goals and values building client commitment to the firm    
  • Solves complex problems in connection with the urban design of large-scale projects.    
  • Leads project design through all phases of work on multiple project assignments as part of a leadership team.     
  • Acts as primary design interface with clients, consultants, contractors, and others during various stages of project development.    
  • Manages work on assigned projects, within group and with other disciplines, guides and encourages the development of staff and empowers individuals and team performance    
  • Pursues new urban design and planning project and business development leads, including the preparations of proposals, project fees and scopes of services in concert with the group’s project manager.

Qualifications:
  • Master Degree in Urban Design or City Planning, with undergraduate training in architecture design. CA architecture licensure or AICP is required. LEED accreditation is desirable.    
  • At least 15 years of progressively responsible project experience in the urban design and physical planning profession in North America, including 10 years of experience running a team.  At least five years of California experience is desirable.

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George's County Planning Department, is seeking an experienced planner to join the Community Planning Division as a Planner Coordinator. The Division is responsible for preparing and implementing master and sector plans and special studies in collaboration with diverse stakeholders and levels of government. The position provides leadership and coordination on dynamic master and sector plan projects and studies that involve team management and coordination with other department staff, County agencies, community groups, and other key stakeholders to complete a project. The position receives independent work assignments and uses their expertise to contribute to other project or work teams. The Planner Coordinator plays an important role in planning activities to achieve sustainable, mixed-use, walkable and bike-able communities in the County.
The successful candidate must possess professional experience in leading the preparation of community plans and studies and project and team management; be knowledgeable about public outreach and engagement techniques, land use and zoning best practices, urban design and project management; and be motivated, team oriented, and skilled in working in a diverse, innovative planning environment. Experience working with municipalities, development review committees, and in older established communities is desirable.

The GS-14 salary range starts at $107,325.00 per year, if you meet the following qualifications. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement. To qualify, you must demonstrate at least 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is experience providing oversight, advice and training on urban and regional planning, land use, master planning, and capital improvements planning and development financing; overseeing team members that perform a full range of urban planning, design, and development and project management functions which include: 1) developing sustainable master plans, 2) acquisition of sites/buildings/easements, 3) security, 4) NEPA compliance, and 5) transportation planning; as well as providing guidance for the review of project plans, local government and federal comprehensive plans and policies, federal security requirements, master plans, public facilities plans, zoning, transportation plans, and other initiatives related to land use and development objectives. 

Basic Requirement: All candidates for Community Planner positions must meet one of the following basic qualification requirements:
  1. Degree: community planning; or related field such as urban affairs, architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, sociology, geography, economics, political science, or public administration that included at least 12 semester hours in the planning process, socioeconomic and physical elements of planning, urban and regional economic analysis, and development finance. Note: Applicants with degrees in related fields, such as those listed above, who do not have the 12 semester hours of specified course work must have had at least 1 year of work experience in community planning acquired under the supervision and guidance of a community planner; OR
  2.
