Founded by architect and MacArthur Fellow Jeanne Gang, Studio Gang is an architecture, interiors, and urbanism practice in Chicago and New York. Addressing global issues through transformative design and local action, Studio Gang helps communities, cities, and organizations make more livable spaces, resulting in tangible and enduring improvements to our built and natural environments. Studio Gang offers a full range of architectural, interior, and urban design services, focusing on built work with measurable positive impact. Beginning each project with a rigorous discovery process, the Studio works to identify patterns, test materials, and develop new models, ultimately seeking to address pressing challenges of climate, inequity, and urbanization.
Guided by this approach, the Studio has produced some of today’s most compelling architecture and design work, including the Arcus Center for Social Justice Leadership, the WMS Boathouse at Clark Park, Aqua Tower, and the Nature Boardwalk at Lincoln Park Zoo. Studio Gang was recently selected to design the expansion of the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and is currently engaged in major projects throughout the United States, including the Fire Rescue 2 training facility in Brooklyn, New York; the Campus North Residence Hall at the University of Chicago; and tall buildings in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago.
Urban Designer/Planner
Studio Gang’s urbanism practice works to understand, contextualize, and respond to challenges faced by the systems and actors within our urban ecosystem—communities, cities, governments, and markets. Our practice blends authentic community engagement, a commitment to socio-economic justice, and deep planning and design expertise to make new solutions possible.
The Urban Designer/Planner position is an opportunity to work on a wide range of urban planning and design projects. The position requires strong analytical, spatial, and graphic abilities as well as experience in urban design and land use planning projects. Applicants should possess strong research, writing, and communication skills and must be able to work well independently and within teams of multidisciplinary professionals. Must have proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS, Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and 3D programs such as Rhino.
A master’s degree in Urban Design, Planning, or related field(s) and minimum 5 years experience is required. An undergraduate degree in Architecture or Landscape Architecture is preferred.
