Research and Data Assistant, The Institute for Housing Studies - Chicago, IL

The Institute for Housing Studies (IHS) is a research center based at DePaul University that provides analysis and data to inform housing-related policy and practice. Created in 2007, the Institute for Housing Studies (IHS) has produced a number of research reports and data products on key housing topics related to the state of affordable housing and the condition of neighborhood housing markets. IHS is engaging in a number of new projects including expanding its housing data clearinghouse beyond Cook County to the Chicago Six County region.

IHS is currently looking to fill a part-time position for a Part-Time Research and Data Assistant. The position will provide mapping and data support for the work of the Institute. Under the guidance of senior staff, the Part-Time Research and Data Assistant will be responsible for collecting, cleaning and assembling a broad range and types of data on housing and community development topics, including both property-level and aggregated data, as well as GIS shape files.

Responsibilities & Duties

·         Collect data from a wide range of sources including the U.S. Census, government, administrative data sets, and proprietary data sets.
·         Clean data so it can be used for research and analysis purposes.
·         Aggregate data and assembling into data sets.
·         Create tables, charts, maps and other analysis to assist IHS staff in the ongoing research and technical assistance projects.
·         Perform other duties as assigned. 

Education & Experience

·         Bachelor’s degree in urban planning, public policy, geography, or some related field.
·         Strong data analysis and research skills.
·         Knowledge of Excel and ArcGIS.
·         Strong writing ability, verbal communications skills, and attention to detail.
·         Position is grant funded.  Hours for position will be allocated on a project by project basis.

Preferred Requirements

·         Current enrollment in related Master’s degree program.
·         Knowledge of SPSS, SAS, or other statistical analysis package. 
·         Interest in housing and/or community development policy.
