Instructor in Environmental Studies
University of Illinois at Springfield
Position Description: Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary department in the College of Public Affairs and Administration, seeks applications for a one-semester full-time instructor for Spring 2011.
Applicants must have a master’s degree, Ph.D. preferred, in planning, sustainability, environmental studies, or a related discipline. Previous teaching experience in higher education, especially with online courses, is highly desirable. Teaching load will consist of three courses:
• ENS 501 (Land Use and Environmental Planning) – either online or on-campus format
• ENS 571 (Sustainable Development) – online format
• undergraduate or graduate elective of the applicant’s choice – either online or on-campus format
Although we prefer that this instructor hold regular office hours on campus, we will consider instructors who will teach all three courses online. If all three courses are taught online, it would not be necessary for the instructor to relocate to Springfield. Strong teaching ability will be the primary consideration for this position. There are no research or service obligations.
Department Information: We currently have four full-time faculty members and more than 100 graduate students. The Department offers an MS in Environmental Science and an MA in Environmental Studies with three concentrations: Environmental Planning and Management, Environmental Humanities, and Sustainable Development and Policy. Students may also pursue the Sustainable Development and Policy concentration entirely online. Undergraduates at UIS can earn a minor in Environmental Studies, or take our courses as part of their general education requirements.
Institutional Information: Located in the state capital, the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) is one of three campuses of the University of Illinois. The UIS campus serves over 5,000 students in 22 graduate and 22 undergraduate programs. The academic curriculum of the campus emphasizes a strong liberal arts core, an array of professional programs, extensive opportunities in experiential education, and a broad engagement in public affairs issues of the day. The campus offers many small classes, substantial student-faculty interaction, and a technology-enhanced learning environment. Our diverse student body includes traditional, non-traditional, and international students. UIS faculty members are committed teachers, active scholars, and engaged professionals in service to society.
Application Steps: Send a letter of application, statement of teaching philosophy, vita, undergraduate and graduate transcripts (unofficial acceptable), and the names and contact information of at least three references to Search Committee, Department of Environmental Studies, University of Illinois at Springfield, One University Plaza, Springfield, Illinois 62703. Review of applications will begin 1 November 2010, and continue until the position is filled or the search is terminated. Contact the Department Chair, Dennis Ruez (druez2@uis.edu), with any questions regarding this position.
UIS is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer with a strong institutional commitment to recruitment and retention of a diverse and inclusive campus community. Persons with disabilities, women, and minorities are encouraged to apply.
