Brookings seeks to fill the position of Data Coordinator / Research Assistant, Metro.

Basic Function:

Primarily manages and organizes large datasets and network files; and identifies appropriate data sources and responds to statistical/analytical queries from senior research staff. Conducts statistical analysis for the Program’s work on demographic, social and economic trends. Prepares tables, GIS maps, and graphic presentations on Program’s research findings.


Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelors of Arts or Sciences in the social sciences or computer science. Minimum of two years experience in managing, organizing, and manipulating multiple large-scale datasets; experience maintaining efficient electronic file systems; general understanding of basic IT infrastructure, specifically the relationship between users, servers, and networked storage in addition to basic knowledge of network protocols; general understanding of computing hardware, specifically processing power and memory usage rates, is a plus; experience with SQL or other data manipulation scripts; and experience working with Visual Basic is preferred. Work experience in fast-paced, public sector office (e.g., government, non-profit, or policy/political organizations) strongly preferred.


Knowledge Requirements:

Strong interest in metropolitan demographics, economics, and policy required; proficiency in Access, Excel, SAS, ArcGIS and PowerPoint required; knowledge of SPSS, STATA, and Keynote desirable; strong organization, high initiative, strong interpersonal skills, eye for detail, creativity and design, mature judgment; ability to work in a fast-paced environment; and clear writing skills preferred. Competence to undertake research assignments with little supervision.


Principal Duties and Responsibilities:


15% PowerPoint and Graphic Presentations:

- Works directly with senior research staff to convert Program’s research and policy agenda into PowerPoint, Keynote, or other graphics presentations for presentation by staff members and general public consumption.

- Collects, compiles, and summarizes trends and policy developments to be incorporated into PowerPoint and graphics presentations.

50% Research and Data Analysis:

- Provides general research assistance on demographic and social trends in metropolitan America.

- Organizes and analyzes data using major statistical software packages such as SAS.

- Produces maps using ArcGIS software.

- Summarizes research findings and some analyses into narrative and/or graphic form to be incorporated into research papers, op-eds, and other Program publications.

- When necessary, helps verify factual material in draft manuscripts.

35% Data Management:

- Serves as the central manager of the Program’s library of datasets; and assembles and compiles geographically-oriented data on demographic, economic, and social trends, using a variety of sources including libraries, large-scale databases (e.g., data from Census, IRS, BLS, BEA, BTS), government documents, private agencies, world wide web, and phone interviews with state and local resources.

- Performs routine maintenance of network drives, including organization, clean-up, and archiving of files to ensure efficient use of space.

- Assembles and maintains data for interactive Brookings web sites including State of Metropolitan America.

- Serves as research staff liaison to Brookings Information Technology Services (ITS) staff; and works with ITS staff to identify needed software and hardware capabilities to support Program’s research activities.
