Job Description
The Georgia Institute of Technology’s School of City and Regional Planning invites applications for the next Director of the Center for Geographic Information Systems. The successful candidate will serve as the Director of the Center for GIS and will hold a tenured or tenure-track faculty position. Applications are encouraged from candidates with an earned doctorate in a field suitable for appointment in the School of City and Regional Planning and a scholarly record in Geographic Information Systems. Candidates should also have experience in a substantive area such as community development, economic development, environment, international development, land use, public health, transportation, or urban modeling. We seek candidates with excellent scholarly credentials, superior leadership skills, a proven record of sponsored research, and a strong record of teaching. This is a 12-month appointment, with responsibilities shared between the School of City and Regional Planning and the Center for GIS. Additional affiliation with another school at Georgia Tech is also possible. Review of applicants will begin December 1 and will continue until the position is filled. The successful candidate is expected to assume the position during the summer of 2011.
Georgia Tech is a dynamic university located in the heart of Atlanta with a full-time faculty and staff of approximately 5,200 and more than 19,000 students. The Institute operates six colleges and applied research and economic development units at the main campus in Atlanta and has several regional and international branch campuses. The Institute’s historic strengths are in the technical professions and its schools are often highly influential in their industries and in policy making. Georgia Tech is recognized as one of the nation’s top research universities and is consistently ranked among U.S. News & World Report’s top ten public universities. The recent London Times Higher Education World University Rankings list Georgia Tech as 27th in the world.
The School of City and Regional Planning is a robust scholarly community consisting of 14 full-time faculty, 110 master's students and 25 Ph.D. students. The School currently has a proposal for a new master’s degree in GIS under review with approval expected in 2011. The GIS Center has six full time Research Scientists in addition to the Director and an administrative coordinator and typically supports 12-15 graduate research assistants. The Center focuses on the application of GIS technology to interdisciplinary, policy-relevant research and the development of innovative spatial analysis techniques and software tools.
