Assistant/ Associate Professor, PA Program University of Hawaii
Assistant or Associate Professor, Public Administration Program, University of Hawai`i at Manoa, position #84818, 9-month appointment, permanent, full-time, tenure-track in Public Administration, 2-2 equivalent teaching load, general funds, subject to position clearance and availability of funds, to begin August 1, 2011. The University of Hawai'i at Mānoa is the flagship campus of the UH System and enrolls more than 20,000 students. The Public Administration Program is a graduate program within the College of Social Sciences that offers an MPA and graduate certificates and has an annual cohort of approximately 30 students. The faculty undertakes research in Hawai`i, nationally, and internationally. The MPA program emphasizes cohort and interdisciplinary education and is built around an extensive first-year program that features a cross-disciplinary two-semester curriculum based on a modular design. The second year offers concentration courses, practicum/internship experiences, and a finishing capstone. The Program's mission is to build public service leadership. The campus plays a unique role in bridging Hawaiian, Asian and Pacific cultures through education, research, and service. The university is a Carnegie Research I institution located in Honolulu, the state's capital (900,000 population), with exceptional racial and ethnic diversity.
Duties: Teach in the Public Administration core curricula, elective courses, capstone, and provide assistance with practicum/internship. Undertake scholarly and applied work, including obtaining external research funding, consistent with the purposes of the Program. The College is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and application.
Minimum Qualifications: For Assistant: Earned Ph.D. in public administration, policy studies, sociology, economics, political science, or a related field (ABD will be considered).
Demonstrated research and teaching interests in institutions from a comparative perspective with specific interest in one or more of the following: public service employment and personnel practices , labor law, interest groups and governance, dispute and/or conflict resolution, energy and sustainability issues. For Associate: In addition to the requirements for Assistant, minimum four (4) years of full-time college or university teaching at the rank of assistant professor or equivalent; evidence of scholarly achievement.
Desirable Qualifications: Experience in Asia or the Pacific. Commitment to and scholarly record of interdisciplinary and multicultural education. Interest in building an alumni network of public service leaders. We desire candidates who work easily in an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment and who are concerned with social responsibility.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and record of achievement.
