Urban Management Assistant/Associate Faculty Position
The Arizona State University School of Public Affairs (SPA) invites applications for an urban management faculty position at the Assistant or Associate level. Hiring will focus on active, entrepreneurial emerging scholars desiring to work collaboratively across disciplinary lines as they establish themselves as a leader in urban management research.
The School has embarked upon a period of unprecedented growth as a strategically important element in Arizona State University’s emergence as a “New American University.” The School’s urban policy and management program is ranked #2 in the nation, and enjoys a highly ranked public administration program overall. It is home to a number of applied research centers that focus on areas such as urban innovation, citizen participation, organizational design, public policy, and policy informatics. SPA is a research partner with the Alliance for Innovation, housed at the School, and the ICMA. Faculty members have been successful in attracting external funding from national scientific agencies, foundations, and the private sector.
SPA offers Bachelor degrees in Urban and Metropolitan Studies and in Public Service and Public Policy, the Master of Public Administration, the Master of Public Policy, and the Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy. SPA continues to attract a growing and diverse array of students motivated by the promise of public service and drawn to the unique opportunity of an interdisciplinary public affairs education.
Required qualifications: a Ph.D. in Public Administration, Public Policy, Political Science, or related field at the time of appointment; strong primary research and teaching interests in local government management or governance (including a demonstrable record or promise of high quality research in leading publications and excellent teaching); sub-fields of public budgeting, financial management, economic/community development, urban planning, performance measurement, nonprofit management, or intergovernmental relations a plus; demonstrated excellence or strong potential in research that will contribute to and enhance the School’s national and international reputation; and a commitment to teaching in a diverse environment. Faculty members are expected to pursue external funding to support research; evidence of the ability to do this should be highlighted. This nine-month position begins August, 2015.

Additionally, the SPA faculty continues to expand its areas of policy expertise, concurrently developing ties in a range of policy areas in other ASU units including: sustainability, homeland security, emergency management, technology, business, engineering, social policy, criminology, planning, health solutions and law. Interest in these or other urban policy offerings overlapping with ASU schools is a strength. Joint appointments are a possibility for qualified candidates where appropriate.
