Academy Director, National Community Land Trust Network

Academy Director
(30 hours/week)

The National CLT Network seeks an experienced adult educator and program manager who is familiar
with community land trusts to coordinate the National CLT Academy.
The Academy Director serves as lead staff for the Network’s largest department, with direct responsibility
for overseeing the Academy’s budget and programs. The Academy Director is supervised by
the Network’s Executive Director and works in collaboration with the Academy’s Advisory Board to
plan and deliver trainings for CLT practitioners and to oversee outside contractors who are designing
courses or doing research for the Academy.

Essential Responsibilities
 EDUCATION: The Academy Director will coordinate the development and delivery of placebased
and distance learning courses, seminars, and workshops. These educational responsibilities
will include working with the Academy’s Dean and the Faculty Assignment Subcommittee to
support and evaluate a diverse faculty of skilled educators capable of delivering top-quality
training at the introductory, intermediate and advanced levels on topics unique to CLTs. The
Academy Director will be responsible for scheduling and marketing these trainings, but will also
be called upon, several times a years, to serve as the lead teacher or co-teacher for a training or
webinar.
 RESEARCH: The Academy Director will oversee the work of contractors and volunteers commissioned
by the Academy to conduct research into the prevalence, productivity, practices, and
performance of CLTs. This responsibility will include providing for the dissemination of research
findings to members of the Network, policymakers, academics, and the general public,
using a variety of media and means, including the Network’s own website.
 COMMUNICATION: The Academy Director will participate, along with other members of the
Network’s staff, in responding to general inquiries about CLTs and in keeping up-to-date those
sections of the Network’s website devoted specifically to the Academy’s trainings and research.
The Director’s communication responsibilities will include serving as the principal liaison between
the Network and strategic partners that are funding the Academy’s work or collaborating
in the delivery of the Academy’s programs.
 STAFF SUPPORT FOR ACADEMY ADVISORY BOARD & COMMITTEES: In consultation
with the Academy’s Dean and Committee Chairs, the Academy Director will schedule meetings,
plan agendas, prepare handouts, distribute minutes, and assist in developing and implementing
work plans for the Academy’s Advisory Board, Coordinating Committee, Curriculum Committee,
Research and Publications Committee, and Faculty Assignment Subcommittee.
 ADMINISTRATION: The Academy Director will develop and manage the Academy’s departmental
budget, assist the Academy’s committees in putting together the Academy’s annual work
plan, and coordinate the work plan’s implementation, once adopted. The Academy Director will
also participate, along with other members of the Network’s staff, in identifying new sources of
funding for the Academy’s programs, in helping to plan national and regional conferences, and
in preparing timely reports for the Network’s board, the Academy’s board, and outside funders.

Essential Qualifications
1. Familiarity with organizational features and operational practices characteristic of the community
land trust – and/or similar models of resale-restricted, owner-occupied housing.
2. Demonstrated experience in preparing and presenting courses, seminars, workshops, or other
trainings targeted to adult learners.
3. Demonstrated experience within a nonprofit or public sector organization in managing a program
that has a training or research component similar to the kinds of training and research
conducted by the Academy.
4. Experience and comfort with webinars or other forms of long-distance learning as teaching tools.
5. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
6. Fluency reading, writing, and speaking English, with a clear and concise writing style.
7. Competency working with computer software, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
8. Self-directed and comfortable working independently as part of the Network’s virtual office,
where co-workers (half of whom work out of home-based offices) are scattered throughout the
United States.
9. Proximity to an airport and a willingness to travel. (Amount of travel estimated at 25%.)

The salary for this 30-hour/week position is $45,000 – $50,000 commensurate with experience. The
Network will also cover half the cost of the Academy Director’s health insurance and provide reimbursement
for cell phone, internet access, and travel.
