Prospect Research Intern, Global FoodBanking Network

PROSPECT RESEARCH INTERN

Employment Type: Internship

Location: 203 North LaSalle Street, Suite 1900, Chicago, IL 60601 USA

Compensation: College credit, if applicable

The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) is an international nonprofit organization headquartered in Chicago, IL USA. Our mission is to alleviate world hunger. We do this by supporting food banks and food bank networks where they exist, and by working collaboratively to create them in countries and communities where they are needed. GFN is seeking an intern (minimum 24 hrs/week) to start in May 2011 to assist the Director of Development with fundraising campaigns, researching international funding opportunities, and drafting letters of inquiry and introduction.

Description of Duties / Responsibilities:

1. Conduct preliminary research on prospective corporate, foundation, and individual donors

2. Prepare summary analyses of research results

3. Maintain grant calendar to include proposal guidelines and deadlines as well as reporting requirements

4. Draft letters of inquiry

5. Other related assignments

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Working towards Bachelors Degree. Graduate Degree preferred. Preferably in Non-Profit Management or related
  • Related non-profit/fundraising experience helpful
  • Experience with the Foundation Directory Online search and other research tools a plus

Knowledge Requirements

  • English Language — Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
  • Computers and Electronics — Proficiency in using computers and other electronic equipment, such as copiers, fax, etc., and very proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Internet and Data Searches – Proficient in creating and conducting search functions through internet and online databases

Skill Requirements

  • Critical Thinking – use logic and reasoning to analyze the strengths, weaknesses and potential for alternative solutions to problems or approaching difficult situations.
  • Communication Skills – write and speak fluently in order to communicate and convey information effectively with staff and clients.
  • Time Management – manage the working time effectively to achieve quality results for the department and the overall organization goals, and manage personal time to fulfill organizational requirements.
  • Interpersonal Skills – develop mutually trusting relationships with others who are different from themselves; listen and respect alternative perspectives and view points, and demonstrate professional behavior and relationships that are collaborative and team oriented.

  • Work is performed in a professional office setting. Business casual dress required.
  • Must be an adaptable team player who is comfortable in an entrepreneurial environment, and is willing to pitch in and do whatever it takes to get the job done.
