Architecture for Humanity Position Available - Design Fellow: Urban Planner

Design Fellow: Urban Planner

Location: Port-au-Prince, Haiti

Description:

Architecture for Humanity is seeking an urban community planner to be based in Haiti for a year and address a wide range of urban design and community planning initiatives. As the country grapples with the needs of post-disaster reconstruction challenges, the framework of planning is paramount to the successful implementation of a concerted effort to improve the quality of life for all Haitians. The organization is committed to adding a professional with these necessary skills to complement its current architectural focus with the goal of ensuring the medium- and long-term success of community building. Critical to this endeavor is the assistance of a creative and innovative urban community planner to identify problems and provide immediate and effective solutions.

The Design Fellow will engage in diverse activities including regional master planning, small area development plans, urban design, disaster & flood mitigation and prevention, community outreach & participatory design, and inter-agency/organization collaborative development. This candidate will live and work with the Architecture for Humanity Port Au Prince office.

Scope of Work:

The Design Fellow will:

- Work and develop community partnerships in implementing projects from concept and design phase through construction.

- Liaise with local Haitian agencies and the Government of Haiti and other NGOs on the ground.

- Learn, understand and implement local regulations and bye-laws as required.

- Provide necessary oversight and urban planning expertise to Architecture for Humanity projects in Haiti as required.

- Work with the design team and volunteers at the Rebuilding Center in Port-au-Prince.

- The Design Fellow will report to the Regional Program Manager

Experience and skills:

The ideal candidate would have:

- Master in Urban and Regional Planning or equivalent

- Academic Training and Experience in Settlement Design and Land-Use Planning

- Five or more years of work experience

- Five years prior experience working in developing countries

- Prior experience working in disaster zones and with vulnerable and displaced populations

- In situ experience with government agencies and foreign aid agencies

- A range of demonstrated ability from state level diplomacy to grassroots participatory planning

- Knowledge of French and/or Haitian Creole

- A work ethic that is flexible and easily adaptable

Commitment: The candidate is required to live and work in Port-au-Prince, Haiti for a minimum of 12 months
