49th Ward Participatory Budgeting Coordinator

In 2009, I initiated the ground-breaking *Participatory Budgeting
initiative* in
the 49th Ward, where I invite ward residents to decide directly how to
spend $1 million in public funds to improve the ward's infrastructure.
The initiative is now beginning its third year, with a new round of
planning and outreach to begin in September. For more information on the
49th Ward's Participatory Budgeting process, visit

.**

*The Staff Assistant who coordinates Participatory Budgeting* will plan
and organize community meetings to explain the process and recruit
volunteers, collect and organize project ideas from community residents,
help neighborhood volunteers develop new projects, and organize a
ward-wide community vote to decide which projects will be funded. In
addition, the Staff Assistant works to ensure the City implements the
projects that have received voter approval. The position also will
require some constituent service and special event work.

*Qualifications:* Applicants for this position must be energetic, work
well with others and believe in direct democracy. Some long hours and
evening work for meetings are unavoidable, especially during the six
months leading to the annual vote. Experience in community organizing
and/or interest in urban planning is preferred. Good writing skills are
important. */Spanish fluency (speaking and writing) is an absolute,
non-negotiable requirement/*/. /

The job is a full-time City of Chicago position, requiring the
successful applicant to live in the City. Though not required, residency
in the 49th Ward is preferred. The position offers standard municipal
benefits (vacation and sick days, medical & dental insurance, pension).
Annual salary ranges from the low 30s to low 40s, depending on
qualifications and experience.

*To apply, please reply to this e-mail and* /*include your resume*/*.
