Illinois Public Interest Group Seeking Public Policy Intern

Non-Profit Seeks Public Policy Intern

The Illinois Public Interest Research Group (Illinois PIRG), a state-based
citizen advocacy and watchdog organization, is seeking a student intern to
help implement the organization’s program plan to promote greater
government transparency and accountability at the state and local level.

Background
The trend toward irresponsible government decision making in contracting,
privatization of public assets, budget-making, and use of tax increment
financing have undermined the long-term public interest and diminished
confidence in government.

To achieve greater transparency and responsible government practices at
the state and local level, Illinois PIRG is working to educate the public
and opinion leaders around particular principles and policies that
increase government accountability at the state and local level.

Brief Internship Description
The primary focus of the internship will involve research, public
outreach, event planning and direct lobbying with policy makers to build
public support for principles and policies that increase government
transparency and accountability.

The successful candidate should have an interest in public policy, strong
written and verbal communication skills and an interest in social change
advocacy.

The internship will last from September 2011 to December 2011.

Project Supervision
The Intern will work closely with Celeste Meiffren, Field Director of
Illinois PIRG. Ms. Meiffren runs the Government Transparency and
Accountability program for Illinois PIRG and is responsible for engaging
our members and the public around these issues, building powerful
coalitions, doing media outreach, research, and direct advocacy.

The intern will also work with Phineas Baxandall, Policy Analyst with the
National Association of State Public Interest Research Groups. Before
joining PIRG, Mr. Baxandall worked with Harvard University’s John F.
Kennedy School of Government where he assisted in directing the Taubman
Center for State and Local Government.

Organizational Background
Illinois PIRG is an advocate for the public interest. When consumers are
cheated, or public health threatened, or the voices of ordinary citizens
are drowned out by special interests lobbyists, Illinois PIRG speaks up
and takes action. We employ the time-tested tools of investigative
research, media attention, grassroots organizing, advocacy and litigation
to deliver consistent, results-oriented public interest activism and to
achieve concrete and lasting political change on the state level.
