The MIT Center for Advanced Urbanism (CAU) is located within the School of Architecture + Planning. CAU is a premier research center focused on the design and planning of large-scale, complex, 21st century metropolitan environments. The Center aims to redefine the field of urban design to meet contemporary challenges utilizing interdisciplinary collaborative practices and the most advanced analytical and representational tools.
The Research Associate will be expected to undertake research work that aligns with the CAU’s research umbrellas, and broadly relates to the design and planning of large-scale, complex metropolitan environments. This Research Associate will be focused on housing, community development and economic development issues in Latin America. This position will be responsible for managing multiple projects, and will be expected to develop their own research focus as well. They will work in close collaboration with the Director and Managing Director, and will provide regular updates on research progress. They will be required to work with CAU partner organizations, to understand, synthesize, and contextualize metropolitan scale issues, in order to inform the development of future research proposals. In addition to undertaking research work, they will be responsible for overseeing and providing guidance to TAs, RAs and students working on projects assigned to them. Other responsibilities will include coordinating project meetings with sponsors, preparing presentations for potential funding sponsors in conjunction with CAU leadership, and assisting in writing external funding proposals. They will be expected to work with a broad network of collaborators, and should have experience working with a diversity of disciplines. The Research Associate will be expected to build a publication record, through both traditional and non-traditional outlets. This is a one-year appointment with the possibility of renewal dependent upon funding and progress.

A Master’s degree or terminal degree in urban planning, community development, economic development, or related field of study, and 3 or more years of direct experience managing collaborative projects (preferably international and/or in community development) is required. Excellent research, writing and communications skills needed. Project management experience required, and proven ability to function as an effective team member. Advanced verbal and written English skills are expected. Experience in grant/proposal writing, leading to successful awarding of external funding a plus. Lyric Opera of Chicago exists to provide a broad, deep and relevant cultural service to the Chicago region and the nation and to advance the development of the art form of opera. We are searching for an Associate Director of Planned and Major Giving who will work in partnership with the Senior Director of Planned Giving to identify, cultivate, solicit, administer, and steward activities targeted toward individuals with bequests, trusts or other planned giving arrangements. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include enhancing and building upon the following functions of Lyric Opera’s planned giving program:

• Build and maintain key relationships with individuals with confirmed planned giving commitments (members of The Overture Society), and monitor the delivery of planned giving and donor benefits that were advanced to secure their support, striving for “value added” results.

• Cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals with expressed interest in considering estate gifts through self-identification, the Arts Marketing telephone planned giving campaign, and any other campaigns, to grow The Overture Society and Bel Canto Benefactors membership. Develop and execute communication plans and special events targeted to new planned giving prospects.

• Create plans for out-of-office/in-person introductory meetings and engagement at networking events. Work on actions plans, identification and contact of potential donors/planned givers for “snowbird” trips to existing or past Lyric patrons who have seasonally or permanently relocated outside the Chicago area. 

• Assist in developing and managing ongoing communications; including dynamic website content, season program advertisements and periodic flyers, newsletters, email communications, and other informational materials.

• Interface with internal groups – particularly Marketing, Tickets, and the Business Office – to accommodate planned giving donors and ensure that the recognition and visibility provided is accurate and appropriate.

• Proactively monitor the estate administration process, maintaining regular communication with attorneys and trust officers (with periodic court appearances) to oversee and secure the best interests of Lyric Opera. 

• Maintain up-to-date knowledge of estate planning best practices and law through ongoing education, professional association membership, subscriptions to industry-focused magazines and materials.

• Attend Lyric events, dinners, and Board meetings where designated stakeholders are represented in order to enhance external relations and serve donors in an advocacy/facilitator role. Proactively schedule Graham Room dinners to enhance Lyric’s relationship with current Overture Society members and cultivate new planned giving donors.


• Assist the Development Team in the identification, cultivation, solicitation, administration, and stewardship of activities targeted toward donors or prospective donors in the $10,000- $50,000+ range. Create strategies, write proposals/letters, and market funding opportunities to prospective donors to secure resources required to meet annual, project and event goals (including Production and other Sponsorships, Wine Auction, Operathon, Millennium Park Concert, Lyric Unlimited programs, etc.).

• Co-supervise assigned staff: Coordinator – Individual and Planned Giving

Education, training, experience:
J.D. degree or other graduate degree, with 5+ years of professional experience in the law or development field preferred. 5+ years in solicitation of individuals for philanthropic support; demonstrated expertise in developing/maintaining strategic stakeholder relationships. Exceptional interpersonal communication and project-management abilities, excellent oral/written skills, and effective team leadership experience all required. Proficiency with MS-Office products (Word, Excel), familiarity with donor database and planned giving software packages very desirable. Some exposure to Probate proceedings and Trust administrative practices preferred. Extensive evening and weekend work during opera season. Knowledge of opera a plus.

The City of Miamisburg, Ohio (pop. 20,000), an historic suburban community in the south Dayton metropolitan region (pop. 901,500) is accepting applications for the position of City Planner. Miamisburg is a progressive and growing community that retains its small town charm with an historic downtown and a mix of established neighborhoods and new housing developments.
The City is presently involved in several redevelopment initiatives. The Mound Business Park (a former defense facility) is transforming into a modern office/industrial park. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) seeks a planner/research analyst with interest and experience in the fields of energy, greenhouse gas reduction, and climate change adaptation. This is a planning and policy research position assisting and performing analytical work, conducting studies, and coordinating with member governments and planning partners. This position will provide support for projects undertaken by the Office of Energy and Climate Change Initiatives.
DVRPC's Office of Energy and Climate Change Initiatives leads, supports, and coordinates efforts to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and prepares for the impacts of climate change, in the nine-county Greater Philadelphia region. Because about 90 percent of the region’s GHG emissions are associated with energy use, the office’s GHG reduction work focuses on energy conservation, energy efficiency, and facilitating a shift to low-carbon energy. The office conducts planning activities and technical studies throughout the Philadelphia metropolitan region in partnership with public and private organizations.  Specific assignments may include supporting analytical, educational, and policy efforts related to energy production and use, and climate change resiliency. Day-to-day tasks include collecting, analyzing and communicating the development of policy and plans, and managing relationships with diverse stakeholders. 
The Research Analyst’s work will be carried out in accordance with well-defined objectives and professional standards under the close technical supervision of the Manager of the Office of Energy and Climate Change Initiatives, who in turn reports to the Director of the Planning Division.
Responsibilities
  • Perform data collection, research and analyses; write reports, memoranda, and summaries of findings and recommendations; and create presentations; as directed by supervisor.
  • Assist in providing staffing support for various programs and initiatives, including organizing and staffing meetings.
  • Represent DVRPC in outside meetings as directed.
