Coastal Sustainability Studio Louisiana State University The Coastal Sustainability Studio is a rapidly growing program where scientists, engineers, and designers come together to intensively study and respond to issues of settlement, coastal restoration, flood protection, and the economy in Coastal Louisiana.
CSS was conceived as a design laboratory to develop strategies that reduce risk to social, economic, and natural resources. The results provide a sound basis for major policy decisions for adaptation through more sustainable land-use planning, protection, and education. Primarily made up of faculty, research fellows, and graduate students, the studio is an energetic and growing presence on LSU's Baton Rouge campus.
We are looking for highly motivated people who have some experience in their fields but very much want to engage in a broader multidisciplinary space focused on the issues facing coastal Louisiana. Under general direction from the CSS Director and CSS Executive Committee, the fellow will be responsible for managing the CSS's community planning and policy based projects. This work crosses a range of research, education, and outreach project activities that together frame the planning for innovative coastal management, settlement, protection, and restoration strategies for the Gulf Coast. Work will focus around the management of activities related to the Louisiana Resiliency Assistance Program (LRAP) and interface with the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) as well as local and Parish level government.
PROJECT MANAGEMENT:
Manages projects related to LRAP; spending significant time off campus managing on location office within the CPRA; managing budget and staffing needs for the Kresge foundation grant and other LRAP related work.
RESEARCH:
Establishes research content, translating research into visualizations and diagrams used for community outreach; supervises the research and production of RA4 positions as well as graduate students; produces publications in academic and other public forums about CSS projects and research.
PROJECT DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT:
Contributes to the long term development of CSS projects.
GRANT APPLICATION:
Assists with the production of grants to build upon existing efforts related to LRAP.
STUDIO MANAGEMENT:
Fellow will take on responsibility as needed to maintain the studio space and culture as a positive and engaging academic research/workplace. Activities may include: providing website content, assisting to organize summer internship program, assisting with CSS lecture series. Teach courses as needed. Required Qualifications: Master's degree in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Hazard Mitigation, Geography, Engineering, or Coastal science.
At least two years of professional experience in community planning, hazard mitigation, or environmental planning. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. with six years of professional experience. With knowledge of local Louisiana community conditions; experience engaging Louisiana communities; and working knowledge of Louisiana environmental change and planning.
Special Requirements: Willingness to travel and work longer hours to attend community meetings or other public functions. An offer of employment is contingent on a satisfactory pre-employment background check.
