SCHOLARSHIP: ICPSR Summer program for PhD students

SCHOLARSHIP TO ATTEND ICPSR SUMMER PROGRAM

The Department of Public Administration will award $2,500 scholarships
to two Ph.D. students in the Department of Administration who want to
attend the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods of Social
Research (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/icpsrweb/sumprog/). The
Interuniversity Consortium for Political and Social Research Summer
Program, which is held at the University of Michigan each summer, is
recognized throughout the world as the preeminent forum for basic and
advanced training in the methodologies and technologies of social
science research.

According to their website, the 2011 schedule and course list for the
program will not be posted until December, 2010. Preliminary
information for 2011 and the schedule, syllabi, and faculty for the 2010
program currently are available at the ICPSR website. This will give you
a good idea of the kinds of courses being taught and their
prerequisites. Because many of the courses require “strong backgrounds
in multiple regression analysis,” students will need to have taken PA
541 or the equivalent in order to enroll in them. Other courses require
linear algebra or matrix skills, but many do not have such requirements.

To be considered for this award, students must submit a written
statement, not to exceed 1000 words, that describes which ICPSR courses
they want to take and how these courses advance their PhD training
(e.g., ongoing research project(s) that use the methodology or
methodology to be studied; plans to use the methodology in the
dissertation). Students also need to submit a list of courses they have
taken in the PhD Program thus far, and their course grades. We will
award the scholarships based on student performance in the program and
the extent to which the ICPSR courses will advance the student’s
training and research goals.

Please submit your (1) written statement and (2) course list to Rebecca
Hendrick hendrick@uic.edu by January 24. Decisions on the awards will
be made by the PhD Committee (Hendrick, Holbrook, and Feeney). Students
will be notified of award decisions by February 7.
