Job Description
The Wayne State University Department of Political Science is seeking a faculty member with a specialization in public administration at the rank of tenured associate professor. The successful candidate will assume the Directorship of its Graduate Program in Public Administration in August, 2011. The program--one of the oldest in the nation--is NASPAA-accredited and awards the Master of Public Administration degree. It currently enrolls approximately 100 students.
The program director has overall responsibility for student admissions and advisement, curricular planning, internship placements as necessary, and related program duties. He or she will hold a 12-month appointment with commensurate salary. The successful candidate will be expected to teach three courses per year. Most of his or her teaching while serving as director will be at the graduate level, in particular teaching courses in the core curriculum of the MPA degree program. While the department is open as to teaching competencies, it is especially interested in candidates who are prepared to teach one or more of the following courses at the graduate level: public budgeting and finance, public personnel management and labor relations, urban administration, and/or nonprofit management.

The Department of Political Science has a faculty of 25. In addition to the M.P.A degree, at the undergraduate level it awards a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science as well as a Bachelor of Public Affairs degree. At the graduate level it awards the M.A. in Political Science as well as the Ph.D. The Ph.D. features concentrations in American politics, comparative politics, international relations, political theory, public administration, public policy, and urban politics.

Wayne State University is one of Michigan’s three ‘constitutional’ state universities—along with the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. It enrolls more than 31,000 students, of whom 12,000 are graduate or graduate-professional students. It is a nationally recognized comprehensive graduate-research university.

The starting date for this position is mid-August 2011. Applicants should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, evidence of teaching effectiveness, and arrange to have at least three letters of reference sent to: MPA Director Search Committee, Department of Political Science, 2040 Faculty/Administration Building, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 48202. Review of applications will begin on February 15. Wayne State University is an affirmative action/equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minority groups are encouraged to apply.
