Faculty Position in Regional & Community Planning Rank: Assistant Professor Position to begin on August 2015 Screening begins January 5, 2015, and will continue until filled.


The nationally recognized Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional & Community Planning (LARCP) at Kansas State University is seeking candidates for a position in the Regional & Community Planning program. The position is open; among similarly qualified candidates preference will be given to those with expertise in one or more areas compatible with university and college foci that are addressed by planning at a regional scale, including transportation, food systems, water, energy, climate change, and social justice. This is a nine-month tenure-track appointment with annual review. The Department The Department is located in the College of Architecture, Planning, and Design at Kansas State University, a land grant institution. We value environmental stewardship, community engagement, and critical inquiry and creative thinking. Our vision is guided by our recently implemented strategic plan, which dovetails with the University’s K-State 2025 plan (www.apdesign.k-state.edu/larcp/about/K-State%202025.htmlstate.edu/larcp/about/K-State%202025.html> ). 

The Department offers accredited Masters degrees in Regional & Community Planning and in Landscape Architecture through five-year non-baccalaureate as well as traditional post-baccalaureate tracks, and we are recognized for our strong preparation of students for professional practice. 

The Department also supports the College’s interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Environmental Design and offers an online Masters of Science in Community Development degree through the Great Plains IDEA. Centers including the Urban Water Institute and the Kansas City Design Center offer opportunities for research and extend our reach in the region. Duties and Responsibilities: Duties of the appointment include teaching courses in the core MRCP curriculum and in the candidate’s area of expertise, as well as development of a strong, coherent body of externally funded research. 

Additional responsibilities include: - supervision of independent graduate research - mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students - collegial participation in departmental governance - university and/or professional service supportive of the candidate’s research and teaching profile - contribution to a well-rounded professional education in planning - working in an interdisciplinary environment 

Qualifications: Candidates must have completed a Ph.D. in Planning or a closely allied field or show evidence that a Ph.D. will be completed prior to the start of the appointment. Candidates must also be qualified to become a certified member of the K-State Graduate Faculty (www.k-state.edu/grad/graduate-handbook/chapter5.htmlgrad/graduate-handbook/chapter5.html>). Candidates must demonstrate evidence of quality, productivity, and focus in research; a record of – or potential for – securing externally funded research; and inspired teaching. Capacity to teach and conduct research in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment is essential. Ability to help students develop skills in quantitative or geo-spatial analysis through the core MRCP curriculum is preferred, as is a record of substantive professional accomplishment. 

The Community Kansas State University is located in Manhattan, Kansas at the north end of the Flint Hills region, a picturesque rolling landscape containing the largest remaining expanse of tallgrass prairie in North America. Manhattan is the largest city in the Flint Hills and one of the fastest growing metropolitan regions in the United States. Downtown Manhattan is currently experiencing a significant revival, with the addition of new restaurants, shops, offices, apartments, hotels, a museum as well as an expanded farmers market.
